Finding the lands?

I like to use part of Nosler's way to find the lands. It works but I have found something that works better for myself and I think is much easier. I take the case and flat spot it, stick a bullet in it and then chamber it by hand. Once the bullet touches the lands you are essentially pressing the case over the bullet. Once fully chambered close the bolt and extract. Measure and your done. Any other suggestions on how to do this? If you don't have a spent case? I need to fireform 100 cases here in the next month or so.

Thanks,
Jake

If you use that method, blacken the bullet with a sharpie. The lands can hold the bullet and move it out of the case thereby giving you a false reading. If blackened the bullet will still be black when extracted. If the lands pull the bullet slightly out of the case, you will see the marks.Rick.

I do it with a dial idicator and a gauge block from RCBS, but do whatever works for you!

Jake, I use tools made like this:

Just insert the bullet you want to use into the neck then chamber the dummy. I usually lock and unlock the bolt three or four times and then CAREFULLY extract the dummy, being careful to not let the bullet's position be disturbed. Then I measure carefully using a caliper with a Hornady comparator set. That gives me a reference as to where the bullet is in relation to the lands.

I used to just measure the OAL and then use that same bullet for setting up the seating die. It seems to work much better when I use the comparator for measurements. Somehow it's more consistent.

here is what I do
make sure the rifle is cocked and slide a cleaning rod with a flat jag down the bore till it hits the boltface, put a mark on the ramrod at the end of the bore with a sharpie.
remove the bolt and insert a bullet into the chamber, push it against the lands with the eraser end of a pencil, reinsert the rod until you feel it touch the bullet tip, put another mark on the ramrod at the end of the muzzle. measure between the marks.
