fine tuning the 25/06 :)

Well last time out I was able to find a powder that broke 3300fps with 100g NBTs and achieve 3 shot 1/2 MOA @100 in my win model 70 classic sporter 25/06, powder was RL22, neck sized/weight sorted Rem case, WLR primer, OAL of 3.245" 58g did .38" @3381fps

So this time around I loaded 4 loads with 4 shots apiece, went in .3g increments, kept everything else the same. Trying to find the middle of the node with powder charge, think I'm gettin there. Here's what I came up with.

57.7- .68" @3294fps
58- .45" @3358fps
58.3- .59" @3366fps
58.6- .77" @3375fps

58 still came out on top accuracy wise. Can't complain about 4 shot group in the .4s with a factory sporter, and 3 shot group in the .3s.

I think anywhere from 58-58.6 is where she's liking it, so I should probly stick with 58.3 to put me in the middle of things.

I think I can further improve these groups with a bit more fine tuning next time out with seating depth changes in .005" deeper, since they are right at the lands now, only one way to go and she may tighten up some, still seems to throw 1 out on most loads at the longer depth, but were talking a bullet hole...

58.6 actually did the best 3 shot group which woulda been in the low to mid .2s, but it threw the furthest, and really had the only "flyer" out of the 4 groups at the same time. I know I didn't pull it 3/4...may be worth trying again, may just be getting out of that top end range sweet spot as well.

Either way, I think I'm just debating over cake and ice cream at this point... I should just load em up at 58.3 and start shooting some 500-600 yard gongs and jugs :)

Jorey, buddy, that is a load I like alot man. RL22 is a favorite of mine and speeds like that with a 100 BT should be a coyote BLASTER! That just might be the first load I try in mine, just cause I know it works in one Model 70, bet it wouldn't take much to make it shoot in mine either.

Did you have to bed yours or anything like that? I had the trigger tuned up on mine, but I am going to shoot it a little before I do anything to it. Sometimes the Winchesters shoot just fine the way are.

That is great shooting Jorey. That gets me revved up alot to get out and shoot mine some.

I do think it is time to change your name to Winchesterman_25_06 though.

It looks as if you've done well. Congratulations on finding a load that works so well.

I'd stick with the most accurate load (58grs) unless you can duplicate or better it consistently with one of the others. The velocity gain isn't enough to give up sub 1/2" accuracy IMO. That's good shooting from a factory sporter.

Jorey,

Nicely done. I have made a mental note for 58.0 grs RL 22 with the 100 gr BT.

Load`m up @ 58 and start shoot`n! JMHO of course.

That is the same load I was shooting with my 25-06 when I was shooting 100gr bullets.

BTW, nice shoot`n!

remingtonman 25-06,

Have you ever developed a load with H4350? I hear between 52 and 53 grains with a 100-grain pill is nice, but I'm still waiting on my 25 cal barrel to arrive.

Winchesterman wouldn't be a bad idea! I really do like the model 70, but I still really like a good 700 as well!

Rifle is not bedded, or even floated all the way, but she has shot 1/2 moa as is for a while now so I don't see need to mess with it! Only thing I've done is lighten trigger to a hair over 2#. My 7 RM on other hand has been glass bedded/floated, trigger work was already done and set at 3.5#, which I'd like to take down around the 2 mark soon.
I've got some H4350 on the shelf, just didn't seem like a powder that was gonna do what I wanted. Basically same as IMR version, but from everything I've seen in books and net, its hard to get 3300+ out of it. IMR4350 around 52-52.5 is usually a decent load in most and around 3250-3300.

I think ill go head and load up a few more at 58g and take it out to jakes next time out and see how she does at 400 and 600 and report back.

Jorey, that is great to hear. Hopefully mine will do the same.

Looking forward to seeing what your does out at 400 and 600.. I might have to grab a few boxes of them. I imagine they would zap deer, with just a little nudge of recoil. Alot of folks really like the 100 BT on deer. It has to be like a lightening strike.

Oh I can assure you they work just fine on our muleys and whitetails from 100 to 600, that's for sure.

Great dual purpose load if you ask me. 25/06 kills a lot better then what ballistics on paper says it should...I probly won't use it much for deer just because my range is cut in almost half over my 7 RM, but ya never know, those 100 NBTs may see a buck or two in the future again :)

Can't wait to get out to jakes myself with it! Been a while since I've visited the 600 yard gong with the 25 :)

Yeah, that sounds like my kinda fun right now Jorey. I am itching to get back out with the long guns and have some good range time. I will have to try your RL22/100 BT load, that is something that is right up my alley for sure. It would be even better to coax a deer near that rifle this Fall.

I'd confirm that. I use 53gns H4350 & IMR4350 with the 100gn Sierra Prohunter 1620. MV chrono'd at 3320 Avg. with 22fps extreme spread. 3 shot groups at 1/4 MOA @ 100yds.
Both propellants produced the much same result but the impact point with IMR4350 was approx 1" left @ 100yds.
30fps ES with IMR4350.
Primer is Rem. 9 1/2
That's on a 20.5" barrel. No pressure signs at all. Cheers, ET

Good info
Just got a custom Cooper in 25-06 and will be working up loads soon

Sir, that right there requires a picture or two! We don't see many Cooper's around here!...

I wish I could make the 115 Bergers shoot. I got RE25 to deliver 5 shots into .354 but then it tossed the next two shots out an inch. I'll have to play with it a little more. I'm not sure which way to go in primers, with that much powder normally I'd be reaching for a magnum primer but the Rem 9 1/2 is pretty hot for standard large rifle anyway.

I was thinking of trying the 115 Bergers, but I got a ton of 115 BT's as 2nds and the BC seems to be fairly close, so I will try them first. Plus, I kinda trust the BT a little more, just for my jaded reasons though...

Try WLR primer in 2506...I use to use fed 210s and cci 200s but a guy told me once who knows a heckuva lot more then I do about the cartridge to try a WLR primer in it. that was years ago and I'm still using only WLR primers out of my 2506. I won't and don't use them for anything else but for whatever reason it seems to really like them.

I have a good load worked up with the 115 vld and RL22. But I'd much rather use the 115 NBt as well since BC isn't much different and its still very accurate bullet and a better hunting bullet IMO.
