Loading some 160 grain AB in 7mm Mag for a buddy. Using the new Nosler Brass and Fed 215 Primers. Have loaded RL 22, 4831sc, and 4350. While loading the 4350 from 56 to 60 grains the gun zeroed in for a beautiful .86 4 shot group at 58 grains. I thought I found my load. Loading additional rounds using the same bullets and powder, upon returning to the range 2.5" 4 shots? This gunn seems to be very finnicky even with small poder charge changes. Help.

deadeye,

Just a thought to clues for you to look into.

1. check powder measure for consistancy.
2. bullet seating depth
3. same brand/lot of primers
4. same brand/lot of powder
5. has/was the rifle cleaned? fouling?
6. barrel cold/hot
7. bedding scress tight
8. scope rings/bases tight
9. quality of scope
10. rifle rest/sandbags
11. Shooter too much coffee/pop
12. Shooter. Sometimes we all just have a bad day of shooting.

I would suggest that you try the same load again.

As I have posted on this forum before, I have had a hard time getting consistant results with the Accubonds.

I readily admit that I have recently had good results with them in a new 7-08 Remington. I have shot some pretty good groups with them and I shot a wild hog with them last week, they worked well. I have shot them in a .338 RUM that shot such small groups that I hesitate to even put them in print, they were SMALL!!

However, in a bunch of other rifles they performed quite erratically. My .300 Wby Mag did just what you are seeing. I would work up a load and think I was all set when trying the 200 grain AccuBond. I would load up some more of the same recipe and be very dissapointed when I went back to the range. I finally gave up on them in that rifle. It just shoots 180 Partitions under an inch, time after time.

So, I am not sure what to tell you. Sometimes these bonded bullets shoot great, sometimes not. I had the same problem with 150 Swift Scirroccos in my 7mm Wby Mag.
I would think I had to magic load all worked up only to have them shoot like crap on the next trip to the rifle range.

My buddy has a new .257 Wby Mag and the 110 Accubonds just shoot well every time he tries them. Go figure!

Deadeye--I've had good luck with the 160 gr AB's propelled by 4350 loaded at 60 grs in my 7mmremmag. The AB's have also shot well out of the 7mmSTW. The remmag does get "finnicky" across different bullet weights, recipes, etc. I don't have enough experience yet with the STW do know all of its nuances.

Let me know if it settles down and how you accomplished it.

Thanks,
jd

Some rifles just don't like certain bullets and they will drive you crazy with good/bad groups. I would check the bedding and all screws. I have had good luck with IMR-7828 in the 7Mag, outshot both 4831s and RL-22.Rick.

And if all else fails, try different loading dies.

I had a 7 mag that I battled for a year or more, trying different components. As a last resort, I switched from RCBS dies to Lyman.

That fixed it. Don't know why, but there was some incompatability between the dies and that rifle.

Nice checklist JD. In my experience when a rifle shoots a load well and then opens up for no apparent reason it can be due to excessive fouling. I'd clean the barrel with a new bore brush, regular old Hoppes, and then CR-10. Good luck and let us know how everything turns out.
