I hunted elk this season with an "A" tag which is archery in Sept and muzzleloader for a couple of weeks in Dec.
I have to admit, this hunt was a lot of fun. Only saw one hunter at a gate and no one else all week. We were into elk every day with the bulls making a lot of noise. I did get one shot on a 6 pt but when he "pinned" us he was at about 35 - 40 yds and I had it in my head to use the red pin. He turned and made three large bounds while my buddy made cow yelps. He turned and stopped and I released. That arrow was with in a hand of his heart ... flew right under his arm pit. I should have grabbed another pin because he moved away from us!!!! I will try to remember that lesson.
Sunday, when we set up to cow call, we must have been within 50yds of a bull and a couple of cows. My buddy cow called and so did I. But when he bugled all the brush behind me was crashing. I just could not see them. The 5pt bull bugled and walked right down the trail in front of my buddy and he made an 18yd shot right behind shoulder just high of center. Bull went 40 yds and then the work began. This was the first bow elk kill I was a part of and I'm impressed with how quick that broadhead did it's job. I will still try to get out at the end of this week try to make something happen.
Next on the elk hunting schedule is my son with a general bull tag. If the elk don't leave this area we have a pretty good chance at filling it.
Then my wife has the late cow tag in the same unit, this is a meat hunt.
When she is done I'll grab the muzzleloader and fill it with a cow (another meat hunt). Whitetail starts early Oct and with the tags we have we will be hunting deer till end of year. We have a fair amount of time this year for hunting and I'm really enjoying it.
One bummer though is my grand-daughter contracted some viral fever/rash from the daycare (Dr. says that what it is). My daughter got it and went to the Dr. Fri who confirmed what this was. And I thought my sore throat was from the smoke in the air irritating me. But when I woke up with a fever and feeling puny I still didn't realize any thing was "wrong" this last week end. I started getting "Hot Spots" on me feet from my Danner boots. I haven't had boot problems for over 20 years. Still didn't realize something was wrong!!
Well last night I couldn't even hold the remote to change the channel and then realized that the problems with the hands and feet looking like I got into Stinging Nettle and sore throat with fever is I also have the fever rash thing that the rest of the family has. I was sooo single purposed on elk hunting I didn't even know what was happening to myself. Now that I can barely walk and hold a knife to butter my toast I'm staying home for a couple of days.
I'm planning on getting back in there later in the week!!!!
