Flying to a hunt

We all need to remember that the Airlines will only pay you $5/pound for anything that they lose!

how are you planning on getting your meat back home ?

First, I hope to kill a good bull. I don't want to presuppose anything...

If I kill a good bull KR will take it to a local processor and they'll process the bull. I'm active duty, and I'm flying on Delta, but I'm not on orders to travel. The current rules say I can transport 2 bags free, up to 50 lbs each. I could then carry up to 100 lbs of meat home, assuming I ship my other goods home. Or the processor says for a couple hundred dollars they can ship the meat (overnight) to me. I will probably ask the processor to ship the meat to me. Another benefit of this is the processor could age the meat a while.

My wife also wants the hide soft tanned. That will mean skinning in the field and carrying the hide out in one piece--we'll see what happens with that. May not even be possible if we have to quarter before skinning. Other elk I've taken aren't always kind enough to die in convenient places!

sounds like you have a plan . I'd sure like to get back to Colorado for another elk hunt . I don't enjoy the 30 hour , each way , car ride . so I've been thinking on flying out . but then getting an elk back home becomes a problem . good luck on your hunt .

I regularly fly for hunts. I use a Tuff-Pak and load it up to the weight limit with rifle, clothes, etc., and ammo. The only time I ever got close to the ammo weight limit was for an extended prairie dog trip.

If you take an extra scope, be sure to have the tools to remount it. You would want to check zero unless it is in a mount that's designed for removal and reinstallation.

In some countries other than the US, (South Africa, for example) the ammo has to be separately packed, and even sometimes in a completely different piece of luggage. You are good to go in the US. The problems show up when the TSA or airline employee don't know their own procedures. If there's a problem, ask for a supervisor. I've had a few issues when they don't know their own rules.

Great hunting in that part of Utah.

I have always traveled with my ammo inside the gun case, as previously stated, long as you package it properly.

I'm at Reagan National, waiting on my flight to depart. Everything seems to be going smoothly so far, checked the rifle and gave it to TSA. I put the ammo in the rifle case, and neither Delta nor TSA commented on the packaging.

The Delta lady did say "are those the bullets?" when I opened the case, eyes wide like she hadn't seen ammo that size before. It's just 30-06 with 180 Partitions!

They could always call my name, though...depart in an hour.

We're pulling for you, Joel. Best of luck on the flight and on the hunt. We'll all be eager to hear how things went.

Good luck!
Have fun and I look forward to reading about your adventure. Both the airport adventures and the hunt as well as anything else you care to share.

Just arrived in WA from CO.... Southwest handled my rifle well. I put two 20rd MTM boxes of rounds in with the rifle in the pelican case. Checking zero tomorrow.... then hitting the trailhead at midnight. A quick 5 miles and 4000 vertical feet.... and we'll be glassing blacktails and black bears Monday morning.

Pelican case is the only way to fly....

Good luck on your hunt :)

I well be flying as well, here in Canada the ammo has to be in a separate container in your luggage, any optics are allowed on your carry on bag. My rifle/rifles go in nothing but a pelican hard case.

No deers or bears on our high country hunt.... but man was it a beautiful couple days. I could see Mtn. Goats from my hammock every day.

I reassembled my rifle after the flight, and it was only off .1 MIL in both elevation and windage..... at least until a little spill crossing a scree slope. I then proceeded to miss two coyotes... oy to find out I'd knocked it clear off paper in the tumble. Probably a good thing I didn't see that Booner!

Lovely country.
Sorry to hear that you knocked your scope off but glad you discovered it like you did.
