From the Department of Redundancy Department

You guys would have my sympathy, except, I have WRCD (Winchester Rifle Compulsive Disorder) which was in remission until I started frequenting this board. I had sold all of my Winchesters except three rifles. Now, the symptoms are starting to egress again!

I hear ya. That stack of M70s that Scotty posts pictures of has me drooling.

I have seen signs from Scotty recently which indicate a burgeoning affliction with WRCD.

The scoundrel. He should be taken out and compelled to purchase a "gasp" Remington.

I would say more of a positive influence, pulling me away from The Dark Side.

Some of these guys? Heck, I never know what I'm going to buy next. I had myself convinced it was going to be a .243 or .264!

Kurt, that rifle looks like it could be the twin to my 264! To tell you the truth, I had no idea I could have gotten a RUM in the regular Sporter. I'm jealous right now buddy! I'm scared to ask how you stumbled on this rifle, it's pretty awesome.

Yeah, the recoil pad won't help at all with the RUM. It's fine with 264 though. Again, awesome grab. I could not have passed it up either! Scotty

Scotty, it was posted on a local forum's classified section. RUMs are pretty rare, and I ended up giving the guy exactly what he was asking for... my negotiating skills deserted me. What the heck, I'll probably shoot it 1k times, then use the action for a .404 build, and you know that's not gonna be cheap!

Kurt, you did well with that rifle. My 264WM is very accurate. Give me a few minutes and I will post up some results of yesterdays range day. I did have to bed the rifle to get rid of the hot glue bedding, but 5.00 worth of Acra Gel really turned this rifle into a very consistent rig. Overall, I would "almost say", it is one of my best ones yet. I love the Sporters a bunch, the stock just snugs right up to my fat face well and shoots very good. I can't wait to see what it does for you. I know I would have dropped some money had I come across a M70 RUM in a heartbeat. Especially now that Nosler is making brass for them. What a package those RUM's are. Scotty

I'll take that recommendation pretty strongly. I think you and I are built pretty similarly, except I'm probably more... oh, let's say, 'fleshy'; big tall guys, wide shoulders and full faces. This won't be my last Sporter, as I find them very handsome rifles. don't know what they might be chambered in, outside of a .264. .338 is on the short list, as is a .25-06. .30-06 is never a bad choice. What I would like to see (and it will probably never happen) is for Winchester to offer .257, 7mm, .300 and .340 Weatherby Magnums, .300 H&H, .338-06, 7x57 and .280 Remington. Just not all at once.

My 338WM with the B&C and the 264WM both have the Sporter stocks on them and man, they just fit very well. That would be an awesome line up of cartridges Kurt. I would give them some time as they are starting to pick up the pace slowly, which makes much more sense than bringing out rifles for a year and then dropping it. I hate when that happens. They do need a few other 264's in their line up though. Scotty

Scotty,

That would not be bad, I guess. My gun-buying bender lately has left me seriously short of safe space, and I still need to seriously invest in some alpha (Zeiss, Swaro, Leica) glass... compact binos, 10x50 binos, LRF, and at least one spotting scope. That's gonna leave a mark.

Yeap, that Alpha glass is pretty sweet stuff Kurt. I know I am digging your new M70 though. It is a perfect match for the 264! Scotty

I just did some testing recently of resolution and contrast with several scopes and posted a comparison chart on the Cabela's forum which nobody responded to. Anyhow, the results of my tests on scopes that I own were done 1/2 hour after sunset, on a dark day, in deep shade, with a ISO11223 (QA-72) ladder chart with resolution bars between 1 and 10 bars/millimeter. This testing was done at 4x to 5x (to maximize exit pupil at 8mm) and compare all scopes at the same magnification to eliminate twilight factor differences.

The bottom line is that the Zeiss Diavari (5-15x42), the Kahles KX (3.5-10x50) and the Swarovski AH (4-12x50) scope were all able to resolve 8 lines/mm or more which is amazing resolution compared even to the Bushnell Elite and Zeiss Conquest, both of which where 4 lines/mm or less. The Minox ZA5 (2-10x40) was also surprisingly good at 6 lines/mm resolution.

Thats great info Charlie, that MINOX 2-10 is destined for one of my rifles, if not a few. The more I shoot the current Minox, the more I like it. Very nice glass for the money. Scotty

The test surprised me on three counts: how bad the Bushnell was, how good the Minox was and how badly my Conquest did in relation to the Minox. The Conquest is really contrasty but it just did not stack up for resolution. I honestly expected the Conquest and Minox to tie.

I expected Der Master Race scopes to be good, they should be for what they cost and they are. Plus, mine are all a few years old and do not have the latest coatings, except the Conquest and Minox.

I know for a fact that for my ageing eyes, the Diavari, Swarovski and Kahles scopes that grace my rifles allow me to hunt from the first hint of light until the last ray pierces the growing gloom. In honesty, the Leupold VX7 that sits atop my 300 WSM seems almost as good as these. The Vortex PST that I just put on my 375 Win seems quite bright as well.
