Fur Friendly .22-250 loads?

My brother in law has been looking for a "fur friendly" substitute in his .22-250 coyote rifle.

We all use the Nosler 55 grain Ballistic tip out of our .22-250 rifles as the "go-to" load for everything, trouble is they are very detrimental to saving hides.

Anyone know of a bullet that is more "fur friendly" (I can't say that with a straight face) for a .22-250?

Thanks -

Dale

You could try a lighter bullet like the 40gr BT, but the 22-250 is not great for saving fur. Especially on fox/cats

I was thinking of giving the 60 grain Partition loads a try. Something that didn't open up as fast or violently...perhaps some 55 grain FMJs are the best answer?

You could try the 60gr bonded solid base but your still going to get a lot of damage, Going lighter will probably get you Brest results at those speeds

The 50 gr BT was fairly easy on hides if you keep the shots in the ribs but I did have a few runners.
The 60 gr PT worked well but 1:14 twist is iffy for stabilization. The 64 gr BSB was ok. The key is to stay off bone as the 22-250 is not fur friendly.

Or you could go light and explosive....like a 36gr varmint grenade or the like. Hopefully get a small entrance hole and no exit.

I've got a bunch of 60gr Partitions loaded up in my .220 Swift but haven't had a opportunity to shoot anything with them. They shoot 1/2" groups in my 1 in 14" barrel. The 64gr Bonded bullets also group well in a 1 in 14". Both are exceeding 3800 fps in the Swift with Reloder 17. But, I don't think they would be "fur friendly".

I used the old Hornady factory load with 50gr Vmax in a 220 Swift ( same speeds as the 22-250) and the bullet usually stayed inside. I liked it a lot. That varmint grenade would be worth trying. I don't like fmjs on anything but bad guys! I don't mind if they hurt awhile before expiring, but not a poor coyote. :)

This is what I've tried in my swifts and .223 I settled on the partitions. With the current price of furs (coyotes are bringing 17bucks around here) not tearing them up helps the value. If your rifle will stabilize them Barnes makes a ttsx .224" bullet as well. The fmj's worked but didn't seem to drop them as well as I'd like.

I use this load w/ great results. book load of H380. I have taken some chucks and not had an exit!
I'm getting just over 4,000 FPS and .5" groups.

I have been googling around on that subject for a while now. My opinion in a short answer in a .224 cal bullet 22-250 velocities even 223 go with 55g sierra gameking the soft point variety. I have spent hours talking to people and googling around and that's what I've come up with. some believe 40g plastic tip no exit, some like poly tip around 50-55g some say they splash, everyone has opinions. I have come to the conclusion that a coyote is a tough animal, needs to be hit hard with a small exit hole that's where the sierra comes in, I know people who paid double just to get them when bullets were hard to find. The sierra has been around for years and when the poly tips came around, a lot of hunters migrated in that direction and stayed there. I have seen the damage firsthand what a 55g nosler solid base BT can do on exit when you have to sew a lot. A lot of people came full circle and came back around to the sierra.
