Of all the foods I've had over the years the one thing I miss terribly is a schnitzel sandwich we use to get when I was in the Army in Hanau, Germany. Loved those things but the last one I had was December 1967 when I left there. It still lingers in my heart, however. :) I wish I knew how to make one. The bread over there was to die for. Everything was superb in the food category...Frauleins weren't bad either!

So I've heard. I've enjoyed foods literally from around the world. Reckon almost anything can be made to taste fabulous with a little knowledge.

All I can recall is it seemed to be veal, some sort of cheese, mayo and a bread similar to our "Texas Toast". Oh, they always gave you a pickle spear with it too.

Schnitzel, Spatzel, Rotkohl, Sausages, a stein of Warsteiner...mmmmmmmm. We used to live near Vancouver BC and this place in New Westminster had a German Restaurant that we would often frequent...man I miss that place. We backpacked Western Europe in '05 and lost a tonne of weight from hiking/backpacking etc etc. Then we got to Austria and Germany. I think I gained all my weight back there...

Thanks a lot, now you got me thinking about all that food  8)

There was another dish I liked but can't spell it. It was some kind of spaghetti...pasta ashuta or something like that. I think I'm going to have to go get a snack.

Old Bavaria Haus?

Oh, yeah. I pastored in NW for quite a few years. Still have a daughter living in PoCo.

Nice. We really loved New West. Cost of housing drove us out the valley a ways though.

Fortunately, we already had a house. However, I wasn't disappointed when we moved out of the Lower Mainland. It would take a major blast to get me out of the Peace.

I lived in Frankfurt for 3 years and they had a place that cooked clay pot roasted chicken that was to die for! Was a chain store kinda like Boston Market but much better food! Some of the best Greek food was to be found in Frankfurt as well ! We would always hit the neighborhood Pizza places and Gelato parlor's as well oh MY  Back in the early 90's they were allowing everyone to immigrate to Germany and you could get some really great food ! Half bra house down town was a lotta fun with the numbers tables with a phone under each number as you could call and talk to any table and they would not know which table the call originated!! Now that you could have loads of fun with

I use to go to Frankfurt a couple times or more a month. I carried classified documents I had to deliver to the I.G. Farben building and off duty hours I'd stroll up and down Kaiserstrauss. You wouldn't get far without some honey coming up to you and saying, " Shatzi, you vants to go home with me, ya?" At 22 years old I was a little shocked at the porn shops right on the sidewalk as you strolled by the window.

I can't imagine stuff like that would happen like that in Frankfurt  you were probably walking the stairs a well and I blame all that stuff on those US ARMY GUYS !

Back in the mid-late 60's when I was there it happened every time I went to Frankfurt without fail. I didn't more than get off the Main Hauptbahnhof and get on Kaiserstrass till I'd be hit on at least a time or two. 80 marks was a lot of money back then...about $20!

Germans make something other than beer?

That beer was potent. I think it was something like 9% alcohol. The "flippies" you could get on the sidewalk would smoke when you opened them. Put a mark in a machine and out would pop a bottle beer. Never seen anything like it.

When we were in Europe, we attended Oktoberfest. The wife could only down a half of a stein. That meant 1 1/2 for me...wow.

I remember one of our water holes was a place called the Storken Nest(or similar spelling). When they brought you a beer, they brought you a BIG bear and it was only something like two marks, the equivalent of about 50 cents and more than you could drink, really. It was in Germany where I spent 19 months at Hanau, a little town about 20 miles from Frankfurt, that I developed a taste for beer. Funny, I haven't had one since 1986. I can't now being on Warfarin as it would kill the effects of the meds.

I'm going to sound like a hick, but I haven't had a lot of German dishes. I do like me some German sausage that I make from my wild game. I use Hi Country seasonings and they make a fantastic German sausage blend.
