I just made some phone calls and found some bear bait. I hope to get the baits started around mid July. My wife has a tag and I hope that we can have a nice one come in while we are on stand.

I plan on getting some cookie dough, ice cream cones, and granola for bait. I also plan on getting some vanilla, berry, caramel topping.

My wife and I set baits yesterday morning. The deer flies were bad but we got the bait out and cameras up. My wife thinks both will get hit with in the first 36 hours of being in the woods. My guess is that one got hit last night and the other will be tomorrow morning. I hope to post a few pictures when things get rolling.

Sounds good. You're going to eat well, burp a few times, then go look for bears!

Cool!

Best of luck on the hunt. I'm still nearly three months from our bear hunt.

Sounds as if you could put on a few pounds and still have something left over for the bears!

There is a fella in your neck of the woods that makes bear scents and baits, including an anise ball that works really well.

As for bait, all you need is 5-6 big bags of cheap dry dog food and a 3 gal pail of used fryer oil from any restraint.
Dig a pit and fill with dry dog food. Pour the fryer oil over it. Cut some 6' logs to cover the pit. 6' lengths can be used for a bear length gauge. It also keeps the small critters from getting too much. All the critters will leave scent trails all over the woods/swamp and the bears will find it in very short order.
You will also want to cut a sapling about 32" high and strip back the bark 2". This will give you a height gauge. Anything in the white area or above should get your attention. :)

WT, Congrats on securing the bait. It can be really hard to find within a couple hundred miles this time of year. I know a guy named Jay near Stanly who has some really good bulk stuff that I have been VERY happy with. I can PM you his contact info if you would like.

Used fryer grease is #1 in my book because rain water will not wash it away. The scent lingers for a long time! Take a gallon jug and throw it up into the trees. Pour another gallon right on the ground and watch the bears start digging.

My other # 1 is liqid licorice. I put it in a 20 ounce spray bottle and dillute it just enough to reliably sqirt out the end and completely saturate all of the foilage around my bait.

As far as the bait goes I use a lot of corn rolled in molasses from my local feed mill mixed with chewy granola or chocolate chunks.

I'm starting to get hungry again  Good luck and we all expect trail camera pictures

I also have an endless supply of fudge from Mackinaw Island. The bears go nuts over it.
3 gal pickle buckets of fudge goes quick, a bucket a night!

And if you get hungry, you can always wander to the bait for a snack. :)

How does this work? Is it only good during the rut? :?

I was trying to figure out what that meant too :)

Good luck on the hunt WT

I think its funnier the way "he" said it.!!!!

Holy crap. I read it once, twice and a third time. I laughed so hard I scared my dogs.

The only place anus balls work for bears is in the SanFrancisco area.

Now that's funny right there. I don't care who you are...

Thanks for the tips. We will stay away from the anus ball. As far as dog food goes, we can not use it in WI. We can not use animal products. I really enjoy baiting and hope my wife can put an arrow into a nice one this fall. I am also thinking about making my own 3 pound suckers for the bears to lick. I would like to hang them from a limb a few feet off the ground.
