Glass vs Pillar Bedding a rifle

Maybe I could "bed" that M71 for ya! Promise to do my best work ever! Scotty

Scotty,
If you do get some of the bedding material on the Stock is there a method to removing it safely?

Don

I just finished pillars in my M70. Did glass on the lug/chamber, then did pillars.

If someone would turn off the furnace outside, I'd go shoot. 105 in the shade yesterday, 100 today.

Hang on a second. I thought the Extreme Weathers had an aluminum bedding block, or am I thinking of another M70 of yours?

This isn't the EW I just bought. This is a DBM-S I've had for a bit. The hot glue bedding and tupperware stock finally stopped shooting well and I've been fussing with it since about February off and on. Scotty has been in on it since the beginning, and now he's trying to turn that rifle into a Whelen. I have expect to come home from vacation in August and find it rebarreled, lol.

I had planned to get a new B&C stock for it, and probably will, but this was a good chance to learn bedding on a "throw-away" stock. Next year, probably will get the Medalist stock and think about a rebarrel...most likely to a 338-06 or a 35 Whelen.

Anyway, I want to shoot it now with the pillars in and see what it does.

I have 3 '70's. The EW in 300WSM, the DBM-S in .30-06, and a FWT XTR in 257 Bob.

Good luck with it Tom. I think you would be well armed with a 25, 30 and 35 in your safe.

Don, I have no idea what will take bedding off scopes or stocks. I figure it will just add to the grip of the rifle in inclement weather if it never comes off! Scotty

Just one mistake in the "well armed" category Scott mentions...make it a 25, 30 and 338 caliber!! :p

I tried vinegar but it didn't touch it? I will give it another try though and see what it does. It was Acra Gel so maybe I need to scrub harder. Scotty

It takes it off when it's liquid (dissolves it completely). I've gotten traces of it off with vinegar. How you trying to remove? ;)

I've gotten most of it off, just a little piece stuck to my stock and some residue left on my scope. Nothing horrible but it is a pain to mess with once it's hard. I should have taped and release agent'ed everything. I should learn but I go some time between jobs I forget tricks I've learned. Scotty

I have a butt-load of rifles for you to practice on if ya want to! I'll even let you shoot a few of them! :)

Same here.........believe it or not, some of the run-of-the-mill gun oil I got in a Hoppes cleaning kit also seemed to take some of it off.

I have tried some gun oil and that did work. Maybe some Kroil in and around the bedding (on the parts I don't want it) will get underneath of it and loosen it up? Scotty

Sandpaper eats acra-glass up in no time. To square up the front of the bedding in my tupperware stock, I put a strip of sandpaper along a popsicle stick and used it that way. Mabye you could go that route till you get down to a thin layer?

Yeah, I am too chicken to use sand paper that close to my stock. I am a little heavy handed when the paper comes out! Scotty
