I sent my rifle out to get some work done on it... new barrel, rechambered, blueprinted, etc. I think I have the bullets I want to shoot picked out now I just need to pick out a new scope. I'm mostly going to be huntng with this gunand the majority of that is at pretty long range. About 400 yds and beyond. I also want to start shooting paper at long range 1000 plus. What would be an ideal scope suitabe for both tasks for 800 bucks or less? I was thinking the vxIII 6.5-20x50 but I'm not sure.

Does that scope have enough upward adjustment to reach 1000yds without shimming the base? If not is there a formula to figure out how much a given amount of shim will change my p.o.i.?

Its a rem 700 chambered in 300 weaver(300rum improved). Good info on long shooting in there. Thanks!

6.5x20 is a good choice, the Mark 4 series has the M1 dials and a 30mm tube for more internal adjustment. I think you will also need 20 MOA bases for 1K.

I think I've settled on a scope finally. I would love a mark 4 but my budget is gonna limit me to the vxIII 6.5-20x40LR. Now what about mounts? I have Leupy dove tail mounts now and have never had a problem. Lately I've heard about people having issues with them in the field. Anyone here have any issues with them. I don't like to worry about my equipment in the field. Who makes a "bulletproof" mount system that isn't gonna cost me as much as the scope im buying?

Nice scope and mounts ! They will both work nicely.
