I have never seen Canadas tornado like that only Snows
Oh man that makes me slobber for conservation order to start.

Very cool video.

Thanks for sharing !

We used to get ducks by the thousands doing that in our corn fields. Not much anymore, a bunch of new farm ground closer to the Columbia river has been developed so they don't have to travel as far. It is a very neat thing to see. I have never seen geese do it though. Cool video!

Bill,

That is just amazing!
Now I need to come out and hunt geese with you!

All right you boys from SD. Anybody else know where Swan Lake is? To fill in the details......Swan Lake is a Small lake (compared to Oahe) is s.e. South Dakota. The lake it self is a Refuge. It has an island in the middle (part of the refuge) maybe 10-15 acres and maybe double that in water surface. Any way, 35 years ago it was still legal to hunt from the road ditches that bordered two sides of the lake. Guys would lay in the ditches a few yards apart and wait for those Geese to come off. Of course it didnt take long for the geese to wise up. They would get up off the water and cirle up over that island until they were 100 yards up and then head out for a corn field to feed on. As many of you know, Snow geese are crazy, noisy and acrobatic.
Watching them come back in was even more impressive. They would fly in "a mile high" until they were over the island, and then start to circle and "drop", just dip one wing and fall sideways (down) for what seemed like a hundred feet, level off circle and drop again.
My Grandfather took me there shortly after my 16th birthday, with the new 1400 Winchester Mom and Dad gave me for my birthday. On that day SDGFP estimated there were over 10,000 geese on that little puddle , a clear "blue bird" day, snow geese a mile high, and me with two boxes of empty 20ga hulls scattered around my wheelchair by 10:00 a.m. I saw one guy with what I was later told was a 10 ga scratch one that day the rest were all too high.
Grandpa always chuckled about that day and I will never get it out of my head.

cool video. Thanks CL

Yes you do. Between elk and geese you might as well move out here, it will cut down greatly on air fare.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video - thanks for posting that.

Glad you enjoyed it. A person really needs to be there to get the full effect as the sound can get deafening. I love nothing more than to see the face of a new hunter who has never been involved in something like that, it really makes the trip worth while, besides the shooting isn't too bad either.

Bill we kill alot of cacklers in west Texas.
Never seen them tornado though.
Snows? Ever seen a tornado of 10k snows headed for your decoy spread?
Birds landing in the spread and at the same time there are still birds 1500 feet in the air.
Gives me goose bumps just thinking of it, and what a racket they make.

Area we hunt in Missouri is a major staging area on the northern migration.
I've seen 25k geese in a field there. The farmers hate them, not much problem to knock on doors and get permission to hunt them.
About another month and the 10 gauge comes out of the safe and we head north!

No Howard I have not seen 10K snows piling in but I sure would to see 10K snows coming in. We did a snow goose hunt in SD a few years back and it was fun but our guide was a piece of work. We want to do another migration hunt but this time we would like to go to Missouri or one of the neighboring states. It was a nice change form where I hunt which is the most regulated goose hunting in the US.

Please don't take any offense but true cackling geese are only here in the pacific northwest. I'm guessing what you see in Texas is either Richardsons or Hutchie(sp) geese which are now lumped into the "cackler" subs. True cacklers do not even sound like Canada geese they some more like a spec/snow cross and our best cackler calls were originally made from snow goose calls.

Never seen it with canadas. But have seen snows by the thousands doing the big tornado spin and land. I love seeing them do the dippy doo or wibble wobble comin in too.
