I finished up my last hunt for the year today, an Archery hunt in Western Wa. in a popular unit near my home. Yesterday at sunset I located a small herd (five or six), with one small bull and cows and calves. This is a cow or 3 point or better bull unit. So today I set up just across from where the were last evening. I didn't like the setup, the wind was squirrelly, there was little cover and the sun was in my face. At 1400 they started coming into the opening about 100 yards from me. I was laying on my back, with a screen of 4 to 5 feet tall, firs in front of me, in the little shade that they provided. As soon as I rolled over to face them they made me! You could see the wheels turning, all (now 18 of them) were looking at me, behind that screen of trees in full camo, with the setting sun shining upon me. That lasted for about 5 min, and they wandered back into the trees. End of season. A great year.!

Glad you had fun, those dang elk drive me nuts. One day they bust you at a 100, or 300 yards. Next day the dang things will run you over.

I had a cow with a calf, step on my foot in Utah. I was sitting on a rock on an elk trail when they spooked down below and a cow stepped on my foot as she and here calf ran past me! I was deer hunting and elk season was closed.

It is amazing how perceptive they can be, Bill. Yeah, some of us have been there. Everything was perfect, except it wasn't. The elk couldn't see us, except they could. They are well adapted to survive in their environment.

Way to go buddy. I guess it is just part of the addiction. Sounds like a good day though.

I had a great hunt, and am constantly reminded as to how perceptive, and how well honed their senses are. As salmonchaser says on another day they would have all ran out of the timber a filled up the meadow in a couple of min, but not that day. I had a great hunt however, I guess that's why its called "hunting" and not killing.

I was taking a nap, and when I woke up they were just coming out of the timber. It's when I rolled over on my belly that the problems started. Between the wind and the sun, there just wasn't a spot to hide out.
