Headed up upper belin in the snow on my 4th day of the cow hunt,Carrying my M-77 Ruger 338 w/3x9 Burris scope ,Hand load 225 grain NOSLER partitions. (sweet). Hunted the 1st day and the 3rd day of the 2 month long Cow elk hunt in the S.W. Santiam unit in Oregon. On the 4th day me and a buddy of mine and long time hunting budy (DAVE)i have a few hunting budies , and when i call they come running.Well we talked to some Weyerhauser guys at daylight an proceeded to try to get over a right but got stuck in snow. So we turned around and headed back down out of the snow. Drove by the logging crew and 250 yards away down in the thinned out timber we saw Elk. As i proceeded to jump out of my DODGE pu my %$#%&*^%*&^ Horn blew. Well it will go back into Dodge an have that item removed. (Make sure you have it in park BEFORE you open the door. )Well Dave freaked out ,the elk started to run,Dave blew the Pimos call call, they stopped, all i had was 1000 limbs to shoot down through. So i did and KNOCKED her on her axx.We dragged her 15 yds down to a skid rd and dragged her up w/ rope w/ the truck....
Home @ 9:30 am Thanx To Randt Myers of Weyerhauser ,he help us load her...What a SWEET HUNT!!!!enjoy the pic's.

pathfinder,
Awesome pics and a lot of good looking meat hanging there! Only issue I see with any of it is the type of badge on the truck....

Congratulations on your cow elk!
I'm curious, where did you hit her and where did you
recover the 225 gr PT?

Good job.

JD,

My blood is blue.....I can say Powerstroke sitting on top of 37 in Goodyear MT/R's
Bad thing is, when she's stuck.. she's STUCK

I had only Mass amount of limbs in my veiws ,and had no clean shot. I knew all i had was putting a 225g down through all those limbs. So i tried to get on her body as fast as i could before they bolted off.Not having a clean veiw i let 1 round go>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Knocked her down.
The bullet hit her through the right ham shaddard her hip bone and w/ over to her left side under the back strap just missing the tenerlions.
Shockingly there was no meat damage. NO blood shot nothing.. I lucked out but i was not about to let her get away. I knew that bullet would go through all those limbs and hit her and knock her down ... @ 70 yds that 338 cal 225 g par rocked! Got the job done.....Thats awhat i like about the 338 , it has bad boy knock down...( dropped my bull one shot to!)

Thanks for the details. I agree, the 225 gr PT is and awesome bullet. I've sent a few down the pipe of my 338 RUM.

Again, congratulations on your elk buddy. Enjoy your venison.

Ouch ! I knew better than to open my mouth.. knew the MPG issue would come up.... :x I'm sure both of you have me by a bit in that category...

Bullet sure looks like it did what it was supposed to... weighed it yet?

It sounds like a normal elk hunt. You can't get where you think they are but they weren't there anyway. Congratulations on a nice cow and a real good shot.
Good Hunting
Elkhunt
