I recieved my Grandfathers 1969 push feed Model 70 30-06 that he bought new when he passed about 10 years ago. I have shot it from time to time but decided to work a load up for it and use it this fall to chase elk with. I dug up some of his load information and headed to the range. He used alot of IMR 4350 and 4831 powders but I had H4350 on hand so I used that.

The target was riddled with shrapnal from a rock that was shot close by. Not a bad way to start things off though.

My buddy jinxed me on the last shot by lookin through the spotting scope and saying "nice group"...kills it every time. :)

I had a nice 3/4" group with his load of 150gr SP Sierra Gamekings but my buddy shot the target with his 270 and messed it up.

I decided to try some newer bullets in it and found it really likes Accubonds.

I think we have a winner!!

Grandpa's loads shot very well for a hunting rifle that has shot more game than I ever will but I think I will make the switch to some Accubonds. Elk beware!

On a side note we took a detour to a buddies farm and found a few chucks that needed to be destroyed. My .223AI at work.

A great way to spend a morning.

Looks like the rifles's still got it. I know it will give you good memories every time you look at it or harvest animals, this is great!!

I believe it will be more than satisfying to carry that old rifle this fall. Loaded with that AB load, and there will not be any elk that will be safe. Consequently, good shot on that chuck. He certainly did a header after the shot.

Nice shooting! The 165 gr AB load is ready to go. Good luck with your Grandpa's rifle elk hunting this fall. Nice job on the ground squirrel too.

I figured a picture was in order.

It still has his old school Bushnell Banner cross hair scope(no duplex here). Great rifle.

ACLakey,

That is a fine looking old rifle. It does shoot well. You've proved that.

I just like Winchesters ... even the push feed. I had one in 280 that shot far better than it should have. I probably shouldn't have gotten rid of it. However, I did replace it with one that had the controlled round feed. It shoots almost as well as the first.

That is a nice rifle, push feed be damned. She works every time I'll bet and what a load! Nice (understatement) group! Must feel nice carry grandpas rifle. CL

Your grandpaws rifle looks exactly like my 1966, 300 win mag did when I first bought it. Yours and mine also shoot the same. Very accurate rifles.
I used to shoot Chucks and sandrats south of Tingley Lake and Chucks across the Klamath River Canyon. Great times. I lived near Keno in the early 70"s. Great pictures.

It is a shame that the post-64 Winchesters got such a bad rap. My experience with them is that they shot quite well. Had Winchester not taken the steps they did, the firm would have gone under many years ago. Consequently, ACLakey, it really looks as if that rifle has been very well cared for.

That's really a nice group with those Accubonds. I wouldn't change a thing! They are a great bullet for EVERYTHING. The rifle really looks sharp too! My dad has a push feed Model 70 he bought in 1973 in 7mm Mag and it is a real shooter with 160 gr. Partitions. Good luck hunting elk and post some photo's when you are done.....

Curious if you were able to Chronograph the load or not?
