Group size expectations

I realize there are a lot of factors to consider before I even ask this question. I'm loading Nosler Partition and Ballistic Tip 140g bullets for my Ruger 7mm-08. It has a 20" sporter weight barrel. I'm currently at about 45 and 45.2 gr of IMR 4350. Group size is about 1 3/4 inches. Each has a core group of about 3/4 of an inch. Three shots went center and two about an inch away through five shots. I've noticed that one recommendation often made is to change powder. When I've gone above and below the powder weight mentioned above the group size gets larger. COL on both loads is 2.800. Suggestions?

I have had good results with RL19 and Federal GM210M primers. Also try RL15 and Varget. You could also try seating the bullet out further, make sure you are off the lands and the loaded shells will fit the magazine.

First, I rarely shoot 5 shot groups from a big game rifle. If you are getting consistant 3 shot groups under 1" & the vel. is where you want it to be, then move out to 200 or 300yds & give them a try. SOmetimes, loads that shoot well at 100 shoot poorly out at 200 & vis versa.

I agree that you should be shooting 3 shot groups for testing. But, you should shoot several 3 shot groups allowing plenty of cooling time between groups. You have to ask yourself, how many times will I need to shoot more than 3 well placed shots out of a big game rifle in rappid succession? Big guns with sporter or lightweight factory barrels heat and drift with multiple shots. You should be able to get consistant sub inch groups with that rifle easly in my opinion. Good luck

I had a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7m-08 that absolutely loved Reloader 15, Fed primers and about any bullet you could put down the barrel; especially 140 Accubonds.

I now have a Rem 700 CDL in 7m-08 that wants nothing to do with Reloader 15, but shoots lights out with H-4350. And will also shoot about any bullet you want.

You have to look around sometimes to find what will work best for your rifle.

Wait 5 minutes between shots and see if your groups tighten. Light wgt sporter barrels are thin and heat quickly. keeping them at the same, or close to the same temp for each shot will give a better idea of how it is shooting.
