I am having a custom rifle built and will be in my hands by next May. This is a hunting rifle, nothing else. It will fill the weak area of my battery between the 223 and 308 cartridges. It is very versatile and is great for varmints to elk with a large assortment of bullets to choose from. It will have an old school look which would only be appropriate for this cartridge - blued/Wood. Lets have a little fun, especially some of you guys who have known me for a good while - Guess what it will be!!!

First, what type of rifle;

Bolt
Single shot
Lever
Auto
Control feed
Push feed
Rotating bolt

Second, what action:
Rem 700
Vanguard
Savage
Ruger
Kimber
98 Mauser
Mark V
Rem Auto

Third, what cartridge:
25-06
257Wby
257 Roberts
243
240Wby
6mm Rem
6.5-06
6.5x55 Swedish Mauser
260
270
270Wby
7mm08
7x57 Mauser
284 Win
7mmWby
280

No, not close. Here is a hint, I have a lot of German in me and my wife is from east Germany and we both like German stuff. Now this might have to do with the cartridge, the rifle or both. Remember this is a custom from the ground up.

Sounds like a 7x57 Mauser.

I figure you will build it on a 98 Mauser action.

Man you are good, that is not fair, you ended this thing to quick. Yep that is it and will give you some of the initial specs.

Shilen chrome-moly match grade barrel

about 24" from the boltface

98 Mauser action

The twist 1-9".

Timney Sportsman trigger

Model 70 style 3-position safety on the gas shield

The action will be pillar-bedded on aluminum posts, and the chamber area of the barrel and the front of the action ahead of the magazine gets glass-bedded.

Scope base and mounts will be Leupold or Redfield, with the action-bridge single piece mount and twist-in front ring, and windage-adjustable rear ring.

Richards Microfit stock in either American Black walnut, or English walnut, with rosewood forend tip and grip cap. A 1/2" thick solid rubber recoil pad and Monte Carlo cheek piece.

Hand-rubbed oil finish, of course!

You guys are not any fun at all

MIke,

I learned a long time ago to take the first best shot opportunity.
The 7x57 is a cool round. Load it with a 140 gr PT at 2900 fps and you will have a load fyou can use for most of NA.

Yes, I agree, because I some big game with a 7mm08 and a 140g bullet and the 7x57mm is even better with the 140gr than the 7mm08. Also, the 7x57 won't pound me like by 300 or 358Win, which in the years to come I might be glad I made this build.

I like the 7x57 cartridge for many things and reasons. I might also consider a Gentry (Model 70 type) safety conversion shroud kit and a Jard trigger for your rifle to make it more custom. My custom Mauser 7mm Mag has this safety and trigger. I like both the quality of both of these items quite a bit.
