So, what are the guns everyone should own? Not for any particular reason, but just because!
Here are a few of my ideas:

The American workhorse, the 30.06.
The other American workhorse, the 30-30, preferably in a lever-gun.
Some kind of revolver, perferable a single action.
A good shot gun, think Remington 870, or old Ithica in 12 or 20 gauge, or BOTH.
Some kind of Black gun 8)

Just to name a few!

223 for varmints (heavy barrel AR-15 doubles as an Obama gun)

30-06 for everything

45 for 2 legged varmints

30-30 as a novelty if, if, if, you want.

other than the above mentioned items, I think maybe an old military rifle such as an M1 Garrand or M1 carbine. for nostalgia sake.

Being that I ended up with a 30-06 this year, I'm now considering adding to my collection of rifles by acquiring a 7MM RUM to keep my 300 and 338 RUMs company. I absolutely do not need it, as I have a 270WSM, the afore mentioned 30-06 and a 338WM, but it would be cool to have the RUM collection (except the 375RUM, I have no desire to acquire this one).

Rich:

Before you get the 7 Rum let me warn you. Unless you will be happy launching 160 Accubonds at 3200-3300 fps do not get it. I have worked extensively with several and none would perform with the 140 grain bullets. 3400 is all I could muster before running into pressures. Weird.

If I decide, I was thinking of the 150ET. If it doesn't like it, the 160AB was next. I'm not so concerned with velocity as I am with accuracy.

A_S, I can't believe the 270 is not on your list, but you're right the 06 is king lol.

I say 223 if you don't reload and 204 if you do. 7mm Mag or 06. Yep that about covers it, but that would be way to boring and economical for me.

I love the .270, and every Wife and Kid should have a .270  , but Everyone should have a 30.06
I kind of feel the same way about he Ruger single 6....how can you not have one?

i'll add the browning gold 10ga, it shoots very hot/heavy water fowl loads and kicks less than a 12ga 870. but you should also have an 870

What about a 22LR?? Is any gun collection really complete without some sort of 22LR?

Good point:

22 rimfire - the starting point for all shooting.
At least a pair of high-powers - one varmint and one big game, if not more.
A pump shotgun - I am pretty much sold on my 870s.
A handgun of some sort.
I'll also throw in a muzzleloader; the Encore is hands-down the best I've owned.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 that fills the handgun slot, but my lack of a 1911 is really bothering me. I can't think of a better use for the new president's proposed stimulus check!

Unless he bans them first!!!!!!!!! :x :x :x :x :x

Forget talking about chamberings.
I would like to own every TYPE of gun made.
AK-47, SKS, thompson, Mac 10 or 11, Ar-15, muzzle loaders, single shots, lever guns, pumps, derringers, revolvers, gatling.....ect

I am a non-discriminating gun owner. I like all guns and they all have the same right to be in my possession regardless of age, color, type and caliber.

I think every household needs at least one good defense hand gun, hunting rifle, home defense rifle, hunting shotgun, and a small stash of ammo and or a reloading press.

Forget the .30-30. Most useless rifle I ever owned. A rifle with the range and accuracy of a shotgun. That oughta get a rise from .30-30 fans - and yeah, it's an exaggeration but I have utterly no use for one and sold mine long ago... A classic 1950's Win 94, most useless rifle I ever owned.

Anything the .30-30 can do, the .308 can do better. And in just as handy and light a package. Still, I understand the attraction to a completely obsolete cartridge - I dote on the .45/70 which is even more ancient.

Forget the AK-47's, SKS and all those other CHICOM/Soviet rifle designed and built to kill Americans. You can keep 'em. Chief attraction as near as I can tell is that they're cheap. Not inexpensive, cheap. Keep 'em. I don't want one, never will own one. Guess I'm a discriminating gun buyer. I've never gotten over the fact that people who consider themselves real Americans actually own these things.

So - my list of what everyone ought to own:

.45 1911 - one made in America, not Brazil, the Philippines or China.
.44 mag - either the S&W or the Ruger - a classic American revolver.
.30-06 - THE classic American rifle cartridge. A .308 is an acceptable substitute.
.223 - in the AR-15 package - it's what we've been carrying for the past 40 years and makes for a dandy varmint & anti-personnel cartridge if set up with the right bullets.

And... A good .22 rifle, a good .22 handgun and a 12 gauge shotgun.

Regards, Guy

Guy:

The most fun I have ever had at the range was when I bought a 30-30 Win in a 94 Winchester, specifically in a Wintuff laminated Model. I had handloaded some 150 Hornady RN's with H335. The rifle was scoped with a 1.5-5 scope. We put out a bunch of 1 liter bottles at 200 yards filled with water. Man what a day!!!!!!!!

Everytime someone says "range" that is the scene that comes to mind. Wish I would have kept that 30-30............

Still glad I sold mine. Notice that you sold yours too...

I can live with other folks liking their .30-30's - but neither the rifle nor the cartridge ever did much for me. I bought one, kept it a few years. Shot it a bit... And like other things I found essentially useless - I sold it.

Other folks like 'em. That's fine.

Regards, Guy
