Happy Anniversary 338 Win Mag

Congrats buddy...really like the way that looks! I'm wondering how much that other jarhead in Virginia had to do with helping her find it :?:  .
Kinda makes turning the other one into another caliber pretty easy.

Ideas? Brian and I were thinking on it last night. Might need some help with it.

Thanks a ton fellas. I will post what Lori Received soon enough.

You're home, and I imagine that is a great comfort and relief. Still, we do something special for our spouses because we recognise that they make us what we are. I'm still marvelling at how thoughtful and appropriate that gift is. It will be hard to hunt with that rifle without thinking of her.

You aren't kidding Mike. It is an awesome gift. Now I need to figure out how to scope it!

A rifle like that deserves a great scope. How about a Swarovski Z6 1.7-10X42? You need at least one Swaro, Scotty.

My old Super Grade, Pre-64, Model 70 has a Swarovski AV (Z3) on it. It is a 4-12x50 and with the TPS medium rings, it works great. With the power of the .338 WM, I would not put less than a 3.5-10x42 on it, just my opinion.

Charlie/Mike while I would love a Z6. I afraid it is more of a Z3 or maybe a Z5. I wanna stick with a 44mm Obj or smaller. I'm also looking at Zeiss to. Don't have any of them yet either.

Scotty, I would not kick it out if a 3.5-10x44 Conquest suddenly showed up at my door or a Minox ZA5. It would be nicer to get a Z3 or Z5 but you play with what you can get by with, at least I do. A .338 WM needs some build integrity to survive for long but beyond that, many scopes would work.

Very cool rifle Scotty. That is one to keep forever Bud!!

Like Charlie already said that rifle will be an elk killing machine!! Congrats on coming home safe, 10 years of marriage, and having a great partner in life man!

Scotty,

Zeiss has treated me well; I have no complaints about the Conquests. I'm not certain they are superior to the Minox, however; the ZA5 is pretty good glass.

Scotty, we spoke a couple days ago about this but wanted to tell you one of our daughters noticed the same thing I did. Women! LOL

Also, Jerry is jealous as i gave him a bill for a rifle I wanted for his birthday, so he wants to know if your wife has an unmarried sister ?

Seriously Scotty as I have already told you. You have a beautiful and thoughtful wife and the rifle is a great find. It will serve you well. As charlie said, to find one in the shape that one is in, is a true find.

Congratulations and happy anniversary to you and your wife.

Well, the really good thing is I have a 2-10 ZA5 in the box ready to go for this rifle. I was going to put both of the scopes on my wife's rifles (more on that later). She said that she would rather me put the Minox on the new 338 since she probably won't be using her old rifle too much this year. So, I'm not really in any kind of dilemma with scopes if I decide to mount up the ZA5.

Thank you very much A. I'm really looking forward to getting my paws on this rifle. Might have start figuring out which bullet I wanna use this year. I have a couple 338 choices as well.

Well, that ZA5 will be just perfect, Scotty. So what bullet are you thinking of using?

Scotty, that is asy for a standard .338 WM. The 225 grain Partition is the nonparalleled bullet for the caliber and case capacity. You can push it 2800 fps and still have 1750 fps and 1500+ ft lbs of energy at 500 yards. You can't beat that with a stick until you go up to a .338 super mag!

Congratulations Scotty on both the 10 years and the super cool gift.

I think it should be okay. Trying to pick out mounts and such right now. I usually run a rail and Leupold PRW's or QRW's, but I am thinking of trying Talley QRW's? Not sure

Charlie, I have alot of the 210 PT's, 200 AB's, and 250 PT's. I am thinking I will start with one of those.. Not sure yet. Don't have any 225's, or I probably would try them. I think they would all do okay.

Thank you Bill. Can't wait to get my hands on it..

I used the 210 Partitions for the .338 WM for years before the 225 gr Partitions came out. The 210 have almost the same BC and will kill an elk just fine out to 400 yards and beyond. You can get about 2850+ out of them and they usually shoot pretty accurately in your Model 70 Alaskan.

I might try some of the known good loads I have worked up for the old 338 Win Mag and see if anything pops out at me. I have a bunch of 250 AB's and 200 AB's loaded. Might load up a small batch of 210 PT's as well..
