Hawk Bullets

Scotty

Those Hawk bullets would be deep drivers on the 45-70.

Seems that some years back I read reports of them being exceptionally soft. Pure copper jacket perhaps? Pure lead core? Haven't checked them out in several years. As I understand, they expand readily, and hang together, but perhaps penetration isn't their greatest attribute - because they expand so much.

The buyer does have a choice between different jacket thicknesses, so perhaps expansion and penetration can be controlled a bit.

Dunno. Never got around to trying them from my .45/70, and never found them particularly appealing for any of my other rifles.

I shot a fair number of 250 grain X 030 FP in my 356. I also bought and worked up loads using .284 175 X 035, .308 150 X 030, 165 X 030 and 180 X 030. They didn't give me the accuracy I was seeking in either my 300 WSM or in my 7mm RM. I got excellent accuracy in my .356, but as has been noted, these are soft bullets. I ultimately opted to use either Speer 220 grain FN or Kodiak 250 grain FN bullets, which have given me excellent performance.

I used the 358 225gr .030" jacketed RT in my 358win 2340fps for a 70 yard heart shot on a 150lb buck. It went straight through leaving a big exit hole that bleed extreme. No snow but I could see the blood trail for 20 yards ahead of me covering a six foot wide swath on brown ferns and poplur sapplings. The buck went 30 yards thats was three bonds and down say three seconds total.

Pure lead and pure copper. I lost about 100fps from the 225gr Partition and GK velocities which I guess is from the soft copper jacket. If I were moose hunting I would ued the .035" jacket for the velocity I got in the 358win of 2340fps. These expand to 3X their oridgnal diameter.

I have used them back in the mid '90's. Had a little trouble getting them to shoot right. Pressures were a bit erratic due to the dead soft jacket. Anyway good luck to you. Garry Sitton loved the 350 gr in the 1S ruger 45-70.

Just looking for something different for the 45-70. Since Nosler is resisting us 45-70 guys, I am looking for other bullets to satisfy my big bullet craving.

I will also check out the Kodiak's as well Mike. Those are priced right as well. No .429" bullets, but either way, I wanna do a little more shooting with the lever rifles. I have been neglecting them a little.

There is just something about a good lever rifle. I don't know if it is the feel, the tradition, the roughed qualities, the historical use by the American cowboy or all of these, but there is an affectionate place in my heart for the lever rifle.

Not my cup of tea Scott

It's more of a hole in the base, rather than totally open. These are from two different deer.

What about the Kodiaks? Those seem like some good bullets that alot of Alaskans seem to like? Just wondering.. Still in the research arena....

I know that the Kodiaks have worked well for me.

I thought you had used them Mike.. Just wanna try some other stuff.. At least for the 45-70.. Not looking to jump ship, but till Nosler gets us a proper bullet for the 45-70, I am on the hunt... Might try out some of these Northfork 350's too... They look pretty good.. Plus, I have a box of them ready to try as well..

Same with the .348 Scotty. I may try some Hawks in the 71 for deer this year. Just depends how much range time I get with it to be able to try them out.

I would love a 250 gr Partition flatpoint!

You will get better accuracy out of the Barnes original are the Woodliegh both 250gr flat points. I have had trouble with the Hawks at times in getting consistent accuracy but the Barnes original or the Woodliegh are fairly consistent. You can find both at Midway. I know the Barnes and the Hawk are suppose to be purer copper jackets but I just have had better luck with the Barnes original than with the Hawk. Now don't get me wrong, there was not some stellar difference but the Barnes Original did do better. My brother owns a old .348 Winchester and the Barnes shot the best and most consistent and we worked at our loads to get there.
