Heads up, new Mexico nonresidents

Well, I was checking on the New Mexico Game and Fish web page today and found a couple of surprises.

I have a hunt booked in New Mexico for antelope (great hunt, this will be 7 years in a row I think) and was checking on opening day, etc. My hunt starts on August 25th which is awfully early, but that is they way they do it there.

But, I discovered that they have a new "Game Hunting" license you have to buy now. It is bad enough they charge you nearly $300 for an antelope tag, now you have to buy a hunting license first, another $65.

And, they have gone paperless, you do not fill out paper applications any longer, you must apply for tags on the internet or by phone.

Just a heads up if you are going there this fall.

Jurisdictions throughout Canada are moving that direction as well. A way to extract more money with fewer people involved.

I'm doing a cow elk hunt with an outfitter in NM this coming december. I got hit with that $65 BS as well. Guess that'll be the last one I do in that state. Only reason I'm doing this one is it is year number 8 that I haven't drawn for elk in my home state. haven't drawn for antelope in 34 years and and it's been 6 years since I drew a tag for deer. maybe this year things will be different for deer. Last time I hunted deer I saw more out of state plates than Arizona plates. :x

Paul, that is really quite a statement. Good hunting spots attract a lot of people, I suppose. The politics of hunting must dictate that locals are pushed out in favour of money.

You make a very good point. One of the areas I like to hunt deer is the Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona. Some really fantastic Mule Deer hunting there. The last deer tag I drew in Arizona was for the Kaibab and I must have seen ten out of state license plates for every Arizona plate. Supposedly Arizona only gives 10 percent of the deer tags to out of state hunters and I'm thinking they're literally giving that 10 percent out of the Kaibab and Arizona Strip areas to the non-resident hunters. Not my idea of giving the states residents a fair shake. :x Guess it's all about the money. :(
