Help me decide please.

They're made in Montana. I, for one, am grateful for her input, FWIW.

Aleena;
Wow.
Terrific rifles.
I didn't know about those and that website is seriously nice.
Great looking rifles and I am going to keep my daughters away from that Artemis Rifle.
Thanks for the name!

nobody needs or wants to spend an crazy amount for a kilamajaro rifle that is made in africa. Man wants a winchester, let him have a winchester, the gun that won the west, not a some high prized africa gun. I am afraid some people are out of touch with reality

I jumped on to send a pm to someone and saw this

First---These rifles are built in Montana, which is probably one of the reasons aleena mentioned it, as David also live in Montana

Second--If it is not your money being spent, why do you care. I am sick and tired of people kicking other people because they have more money, they hunt more, they are female, they are an indian, they drive a toyota instead of a ford or chev---damn

Sorry moderators and forum members for the rant it just hit me wrong and at the wrong time. please feel free to delete my post.

David, it is good to see you again sir and hope you find the 280 that works best for you, great caliber.

I might also mention the AI in regards to the 280, as this is one caliber where it really does give you more of an already good thing

+1.

Also, I have to recommend the MRC 1999 action. I have one of their "production rifles" and it is top notch.

I appreciate all the suggestions and comments guys that's why I asked. I want to do this thing right the first time and get it just exactly as I want it. Africa Huntress thank you also very much for your comments! I know that not you or anyone else is trying to send me down the wrong alley looking for this special rifle I am seeking out. Onlymuzzleloaders this lady Africa Huntress is a kind person and I respect her input as much as I do anyone else's on this site. Everyone's just giving me ideas and input and I appreciate it!

David, good luck with your decision. Whatever you choose I am sure you will get good use out of and be happy with. I had my first Custom rifle made in 1973 and I am still using it as my main deer hunting rifle. After 40 years, it still looks pretty good despite some wear and I would not change anything.

I like Aleena's suggestion of the Kilimanjaro rifle.

How someone spends their money is up to them. I've considered a custom build but decided to put it off for now. Maybe one of these days I'll have Pat Holehan build me one but not right now. I could afford his synthetic stocked rifle but what I really want is Bastogne Walnut. So I'll wait.

I'd rather have exactly what I want or nothing at all when spending that kind of money.

They sure do look nice, I know I can't afford one :) Still nice to look at though.

I am having my new 280AI Cerakoted & my 35 Whelen was powder coated.
If I was to factory build one I would try Stainless with a nice wood stock or maybe a laminated 8).

Blessings,
Dan

David,

I used the 280AI on a sheep hunt and it performed admirably. I dont think you will be disappointed with the 280 or 280 AI. Through the years I think we have had a rifle with every action know to man and when push comes to shove my first choice is still the pre 64 Model 70, when I am considering a build. Best of luck David

Dr. Mike, Dan, Gerry

We hunted with a fellow you was using a rifle made by Martini and Hagn, with a Hagn falling block, single shot action. Another nice rifle and action which comes from your neck of the woods

Charlie,

You take care of your firearms Charlie, so I am not surprised that you are still using your first custom gun 40 years later. God willing and the creeks don't rise you will be using it for many more.

Sask Boy I am with you. I love the looks of the laminate and they are double stout and tough as nails. Boyds Classic in a nutmeg laminate is a gorgeous chunk of wood at a reasonable price. Now that would look nice with the stainless too!

It's coming together now, or at least for the next day or so until I get some more great ideas!! You can even order the Boyds stock with it completely finished and checkered. The lady that checkered my sons Ruger with that same exact stock sure did a nice job though!!

Thanks Dan.

That is scary  that every once in a while I get a idea that someone else agrees with! Now David if I could only get you to switch to left .

Blessings,
Dan

Yes, the Martini is well recognised. Ralf began his work here in Dawson Creek some years ago, prior to moving to Cranbrook. He does exceptional work. In fact, he designed the prototype for the Heym Express bolt rifle. That is choppin' in high cotton. His workmanship unquestionably excels and those who own one of his rifles own a piece of art. I will say that he and his wife are a pleasure to deal with.

David,
Sounds like you are going to have one very nice backcountry rifle that will serve you well on many exploits to come. Stainless with cerakote and a laminated stock sounds just about invincible and will give you piece of mind when you're five miles from the nearest road, it's been raining for two days straight, and there are a couple days left to try to punch that tag.

That is the exact scenario I build all my rifles for. If they won't take that sorta punishment, they don't hunt.

Tired of stirring the same pot? Might want to go into a discussion with a few facts on hand.

I know this hasn't even entered the discussion, because David knows he wants a Winchester 70 style action, but I'd truly enjoy a .280 AI on a Rem 700 action, either a CDL, or a custom, styled like a CDL... Ah... That would be nice. But, since I've got it pretty well bracketed, with a .30-06 on one side and the .25-06 on the other, I don't see it happening.

JD338's loads & performance were enough to convince me long ago that the .280 AI might just be The Ticket for most North American game hunting.

Somehow that cartridge seems to belong in a fairly light, lean, mountain-hunting kind of a rifle.

But get a Winchester if it makes you happy David! Either way, Win 70 or MRC, would please me.

Cooper makes rifles in .280/.280 AI don't they?

They sure do. Great call. I know a Cooper pops up in my brain fairly often.

From what I have read on them and listened to on Wild TV  they seem to be a very reliably made rifle.
The 280AI sparked my interest because of all the good things I heard on this forum and I really can't wait until I get to play with my RMR .

Blessings,
Dan
