I purchased some new Remington large rifle primers and loaded them in Remington 270 Winchester cases. Every primers was noticeably proud of case even when fully seated. I checked the primers pockets on the 270 cases as well as some 45-70 cases. The primers pockets were all around. 128". The Remington primers were .132" I also looked up min/max primers pockets size and min/max height of large rifle primers. All are within specs even though the primers were toward the max height. Primers are supposed to seat below the base of the case for safety reasons. They will not do so. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a different primer brand, or uniforming your primer pockets to allow the primer to seat deeper?

I run a pocket cutter through just about all new brass. I bought 250 pieces of 6.5 Grendel Hornady brass and my rounds wouldn’t chamber the primers were so high. After cutting them they are fine.

I have other primers and they all work. Just didn't want to waste a brick ov primers. Thanks.

What kind do you have? I have other primers that work but didn't want to waste a full btick of primers. I do have a primer pocket uniformer but it doesn't cut the pocket deep enough and a lot of hand work besides. I was using the ammo in a 1948 Remington model 721 that needs some stock work so it is not a bench gun. May end up with a new stock for it. Is an adequate shooter as is though.

How are you seating the primers? Sometime hand held priming tools take extra effort. I know that the WRE primers are a bugger to seat in new brass.

I used both the hand seater and tried again on the press. I put so much pressure on them I was afraid I would set off the primers but didn't. They then were almost flush but not completely.

I appreciate all the responses and suggestions. What I think I will do is just set them aside for now. I have other brands that seat ok. I will check other cases when I reload and hope I can find some that have a bit deeper pocket. Thanks again.

May be worth reaching out to Remington. Have you tried seating them in other brass?

I have a similar situation with a brick of Ginex LR primers I bought during the primer shortage era. They are a bugger to seat, especially in Nosler brass. I’ve just set them aside and will use them when I develop loose primer pockets.
