This morning my youngest and I headed up to a nearby trailhead and hiked in to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, specifically to Stuart Lake. It's a pretty easy 5 mile hike, gaining about 1600 - 1700 feet as it goes through the forests & rocky areas along the creek. Beautiful scenery, we only saw two mule deer, down low. Saw a raven grab a snake and fly away with it. That was pretty cool. Except from the snake's point of view I suppose. Saw a rabbit, actually managed to get a photo of it. Watched some diving ducks in the lake for a while. Didn't fish this trip, just wanted to get in a good hike, limber up the ol' legs and see some pretty country. Nice way to spend the morning, and I'm glad the young fellow still likes hanging out with Dad. He waits for me along the trail too. Nice of him eh?
The young fellow. He's a lean hiking & biking machine:
The old guy, at 57 a little too heavy but still enjoying the heck out of this stuff. This was a favorite trail of mine years ago when the boys were in Scouts. We'd come in here pretty often, but I think it's been nearly ten years since I hiked this trail!
Much of the route follows this creek:
When the forest opens, the peaks and glaciers are seen, and the lake isn't far:
Stuart Lake sits at a little over 5,000' in the Cascades. The cool waters host cutthroat trout, which are often willing to take a fly. We didn't bring rods this trip, but perhaps next time. It's a popular hiking and backpacking destination, if you hike in there, you will have company, but it's pretty doggone nice anyway.
We covered a total of 10 or 11 miles. A good way to spend the morning, though we didn't find the big buck.
