His First Bear

I have asked Jason to Email me the pictures of this bear and of Jonah's black bear. I have them on my phone, but I've never been able to get them to download. This was a beautiful bear with great head and claws.

This is the grizzly Jason shot last evening. He dropped it with his 30-06, shooting a 200 grain AB charged with IMR 4064. First shot was ~40 yards and broke both shoulders. He delivered two more shots as the bear was still moving. The bruin squared ninety inches, 7' 5" nose-to-tail with a skull 22 13/16 inches. Jason tells me he recovered the first bullet. I've asked for a photo of the bullet, and if he gives it to me to analyse, I'll give you a weight and expansion.

This is Jason and Wayne. Wayne is a local taxidermist who attends our congregation. Wayne does beautiful work, for those who should ever connect with game they wish to mount.

Here is a shot of Jason and Jonah with his bear.

Take a gander at those claws!

This is a good mature bear, representative of a good mountain grizzly from this area. I'm still trying to get a picture of Jonah's black bear, which was his first bear as well. Consequently, Jonah's black bear was 6' 1" nose-to-tail.

Really nice grizzly, congrats to Jason :) And to think some people think the 30-06 is too light for them.......

Yeah, I warned him that those 200 grain ABs would likely bounce off any bear. They barely penetrate whitetail.

MIKE! Oh my LORD! That is a beautiful bear. I am packing a bag.. I'll be there in a couple of days! WOW! What an animal. Beautiful fur and he just looks beautiful.

Way to go Jason! That had to get him excited. Congrats to the darned 30-06! I'll give credit where credit is due.. It continues doing great things!

Man, what an animal. It says something when a 200 grain bullet from a 30-06 is stopped in an animal. Some seriously dense bone, hide and muscle..

Phew, now that picture gets me EXCITED!!! Way to go. Shake his hand for me. Can't say enough good things.. Trophy of a lifetime!

We had lunch today; Jason is still pretty high. He was texting me during a Bible study I was conducting last evening. Then Jonah phoned, and I had to excuse myself because I was still in the study. However, I'm truly pleased for Jason and for Jonah this year. Each has done very well. Not bad for his first black bear and for his first grizzly. It is a beautiful bear.

That is the understatement of the day! Those are all beautiful bears and that danged GRIZZLY is magnificent.. What a treasure. Hope he able to tell us about the hunt in the future.

Four people, Jason, Jonah, Wayne and a cowboy named Craig, were looking where the cowboy had seen some grizzlies. Three bears had been spotted, in fact. They literally drove up to the site to look for scat and spoor when this big boy walked out and began walking toward them. According to Jason, the bear had his eyes fixed on them, knowing they were there and utterly unconcerned. Jason hit him with the first shot when he was about forty yards away. Forty yards isn't far for a grizzly--they can move with surprising speed when they go into attack mode. First shot dropped him, and then it was follow up. It was unexpected in that they weren't actually expecting to see a bear at that point; they were only looking for sign that had been reported previously. Then it was time to work. Jason took the back straps and hams. I promised him that I would smoke the ham for him. Should be interesting.

It's my turn to draw this fall. You can be assured that if I'm successful, I'll be disappearing for a few weeks into the mountains. Yeah, seeing bruins like that does get my blood moving.

40yds! Makes me wonder who was hunting whom. That Griz was looking for some white meat! Ummm taste like chicken.

In a few days, I'll have a report on grizzly ham. Wonder if my lady will join me in a gustatory repast.

Wow what a gorgeous animal. Congratulations to Jason and the crew for the fantastic bears. That grizzly bear is a once in a lifetime critter for sure! Oh Scotty do you see what that fabulous 30-06 did sir??

Mike I'd join you in a bear ham. I bet it tastes great!

David,

This is grizzly, which is somewhat more grainy than black bear. Black bear is delicious; grizzly can be somewhat less tasty. However, Jason was determined that he would eat the meat off his first grizzly, and I'll likely join him, though it is not all that he imagines.

Pretty interested in hearing how it turns out Mike. How do you cook it to render it edible? Slow cooking in a crock pot or some other way?

I'm smoking this ham, Scotty. I would use a crock pot, just like I do for black bear. I did advise him to brine it first, or marinate in milk or soy sauce. We'll see what he does.
