That’s how many I ordered too. I got a couple boxes of 300gr XTP Mag’s for my Ruger MPR 450 Bushmaster as well.
They sure do work on deer just like you said. I load them both to a 2050 fps load and can switch between the two without a thought. Same Nikon scopes on both really does make them interchangeable.

My first 45/70 hand load was the Hornady 325FTX and it shoots reasonably good and has enough for deer or black bear. But being a little bit of an old school guy, the plain 300 HP is right up my alley. I was looking for recipes on the 300 and a bit frustrated as the recipes were all over the place. Ended up doing a short ladder with the HDodgson recipe they had for SPH 300 which starts at 55 grains of H4193.(WLR primers)
Here’s the ladder results.

55. @ 2298. 21
55.3 2321. 5.4
55.6. 2357. 4.2
55.9. 2361. 4.1
56.2. 2367. 6.3

That bullet and primer while stout looks really well behaved.

The recipe called for max load of 60grains
At 2,424fps

I do have the 22” barrel on my 1895…which might explain the great Velocity.. it was 75f during the test.

Now I have to decide if I buy some Sierra ProHunters in their 300HP Looks a little less tapered than the Hornady. I can load the Hornadys at 2.595” and work the action. Limiting factor is ejecting a loaded round.

I have a second ladder loaded exploring seating depth with this Hornady 300 grain.
I started with 200 bullets, so have 170 left after the 2nd ladder.

BTW, loaded the 325’s with RL7 and it’s accurate around 2000fps with 49.1 grains.

I use those Hornady in my CVA Scout V2 . As mentioned it’s a great bullet on deer. The 45-70 is my bad weather deer gun. Big hole dumps a lot of blood.

Those Scout V2’s are really great shooting rifles. They have the Bergara/Shilen barrels.

Mine will shoot cloverleafs at 100 yard with my hand load and the Lever Revolution ammo. I was wanting a Ruger #1 45-70 when I got the CVA, now I can’t justify spending $1700 on a rifle that will not shoot any better than what I have.

That 55 grain load with H4198 is pretty stout even for a starting load. That’s what I started with was H4198. Still have 4-5lbs. I backed it down to 51 grains and went to IMR4198 and 2050 fps. Plenty for deer and my shoulder.

Fellow I met in bear camp about a year and a half ago dropped his black bear very nicely with one of the 300 gr Hornady bullets from his 45-70 Marlin 1895 Guide Gun.

Excellent penetration as well as expansion. Fairly short range shot but I don't remember the specifics.
