Getting ready to load some 200 grain NPs in my 300 win mag Ruger Mark II. Checked the cartridge length to the lands & it is 3.775. Lots of freebore! The magazine box mmeasures 3.425 " Looks like my loads will be made to fit the magazine box. How much room do you guys allow for good function in a hunting rifle?

I like to leave about .020 clearance. The main thing is to look for is that you can load up the magazine and cycle each through with no hang ups.

I leave about .025" clearance in the magazine box.

Thanks guys. I leave for Colorado next week to hunt 2nd season elk. I am taking my Ruger as back up. Going to have a go at them with my 35 whelen mauser as my primary rig this year :) nice to have choices. Going to use 250 grain Nps in the whelen. Can't wait to get out to the Rockies again!

The 35 Whelen is a great round! You are set for elk out to 300 yds easy.
Good luck to you, post some pictures.

Thanks!

I have hunted the same area for a few years. Taken bulls teh past two years. Used NPs on both of them.

Here is our camp last year. My buddy & I both took bulls....his was the smaller of the two. That is him in the picture.

I remember your pictures from last year. Beautiful spot. I hope there is a nice big 6 point taking a sashay right in front of you and your 35 Whelen.

Very nice.
I start at mag box length, and decrease oal at .05 increments until I find what my gun likes. Some of my hunting rifles shoot very well with bullets seated a loooooong ways off the lands. If you BT's are seated out too far, you can help them into the magazine by clipping the tip off with a toe nail clipper....
