For many years I've been a Remington 700 fan as well as an advocate of the M70 Winchester! Had some great shootin rifles with the Rem 700 as I shot NRA HP for around 45 years. After I earned Distinguished Rifleman status with the Service Rifle I changed over to the NRA Match Rifle and being as how Remington had a left hand action in 700....my Match Rifle was made up on this action! Won a lot of stuff using this rifle and I might also add that this was on an action that was made better than 20 years back when Remington's quality control was I think much better than that of today! I have a friend that's a great riflemaker over in Delhi, La. and from time to time I have good conversations with him concerning rifles/actions, etc. He tells me that it's not unusual for him to get Rem/Win actions in today that have internal threads that are not in alignment with the longitudional axis of the action or an action that is slightly bent! My...what a change from long ago!
I've alway thought of Savage rifles as less than a quality rifle.....UNTIL RECENTLY! About 2 years back my son ran across an old boy up in Chadron, Nebraska that works with Savage actions and as of today we have several Savage action rifles on hand that are truly FANTASTIC SHOOTERS; all made up by Stockade Guns of Chadron, Nebraska! Today....I shot one of my son's rifles which is a 7MM WSM with a muzzle brake up front! Brandon has a 4.5x14x50MM Leupold scope attached with the B & C reticule which I like more every time I use one of 'em! My sons off on a business trip and I figured this would be a good time for me to get this rifle and give 'er a go to see what it would do and today conditions were right for doing that! I've shot hundreds of rifles over the past 55 years and have some mighty fine and highly accurate Palma rifles I've shot in competition but frankly for a hunting rifle which this one is I fired/tested today.....this rifle has consistently delivered over the past year or so....accuracy that has astounded me....being a Savage action! I was shooting a 140 gr. AccuBond bullet using 65 gr. N160 powder and at 800 yds. it's NO CONTEST hitting what you're holding on! I've got a 20"x24" T1 steel plate on a swinger set up and once I figured out how to hold using the B & C reticule system....I dropped shots consistently into the center of this plate! Tomorrow....if not raining....I'm going to test it back to 1000 yds. and see what happens! One of the secrets I think to this Savage action is that it has a floating bolt head and this assures that cartridge tension and position of the locking lugs are the same from shot to shot!
I'm impressed!!
