Hunting with my 300 Weatherby for the first time

Nice buck and story. Your pics point out the diversity in topography and ecosystem that the N.A. WT hunter can experience. I have never hunted in an open area as that. It seems simpler but I know better.

Good story and pics.
Cat, hunting Whitetail in the Texas Panhandle is different than any where else... lots of open area and shot can be long. You need a flat shooting rifle and be ready to take a long shot if necessary. There's no way you can stalk to get close due to absence of cover.

Here's some more picture that I took from last year.

Shot this deer at 603 yards. No way you can approach this deer without being spotted.

Yep. Those scenes bring back memories of working in that area. Just out of the MC and went to Pampa to begin pipe lining on the aqueduct system running from Lake Meridith to west Texas. It is great country.

What rifle did you use?, I have a Weatherby Vanguard in this cartridge (300 Weatherby) and I have a concern that having a 24 inch barrel will lose a lot of benefit to the cartridge. Oh Congratulations on the award, is very nice.

Oscar.

You will not lose much, I believe. Where a 26" barrel will give 3200-3275 with 180gr bullets, a 24" barrel will give you 3100-3200fps with the same load. as long as it is accurate, you will not notice.

+1

I had a Vanguard 300 as well. Shot excellent. Had 0 problems getting 3,000 with the 200's, so 180's would have been better yet!

Thank you very much, your comments have made me feel better and more confident in my gun.

Here is my 30-378 Accumark

30-378

Shot factory 180 Barnes. They clocked 3565 fps and they did 1.25" at 100 yds
I tried 110 gr retumbo and the 180 etips 3525 fps and under 1/2"!!!!!

one more grain gave factory equivalent velocities of 3580 fps but was kinda hot. .65" or so

I am very pleased!

Mother, if the cartridge 300 Weatherby is a fast, which you use is a super formula one.

Oscar.

Exactly, I have seen a 30-378 Weatherby Magnum and I tell you that if the cartridge 300 Weatherby is a fast, Wea.Magnum 30-378 is the bomb. A true F-1

Oscar.

Step to list my rifles (removing the Vanguard):

-Remington 700 BDL in 338 Winchester Magnum

-Ceska 550 Magnum in 375 H&H Magnum

-Ceska 550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott

Now all I need to hunt with them, but my budget is very limited. I should have spent more on hunting and less on weapons, but I like a lot, especially hunting rifles great cartridge.
