I just got an email and they guy I bought the .338 from is dropping it off tonight. It is like Christmas for me today.

WT, that is excellent buddy! I can't wait to hear about your range reports. Have you gotten dies, cases, and bullets yet? Any idea what scope you are going to put on it? Man, another 338WM shooter. Scotty

Sweet! I know you've been waiting for this one. Enjoy it! And give us a report...

I only have the rifle. I plan on getting some bullets soon. Right now I am in the middle of a move so I am just saving up to buy things. I don't know what scope to get. I have a Vortex, Bushnell, and Nikon and like the Vortex the most. I don't know what dies to get also. I need to do some reading and thinking on this subject.

WT,

Congratulations on your 338 WM. You are going to love it.
RCBS offers great dies with excellent customer service if its ever needed.
The 200 gr AB is a very good choice and the seconds available at SPS make it a decent deal.
Looking forward to your pictures.

Good deal! Congratulations. Of course, pictures are obligatory for all of us curmudgeons frequenting this forum.

I would look at Redding dies also. Pretty nice dies and again, great customer service. I don't think you can make a bad choice for bullets. That 180-200gr AB would be my choice, or the 210gr PT. Those three would really give you some serious clout for any WI deer or bear. Scotty

Well here she is, my Winchester Mod 70 XTR Sporter Magnum in .338 Win Mag!!! There are a few small marks on the checkering of the wood. It looks like it was rubbed or presses on something and one small dot on the barrel where it is lighter in color. I am happy with it so far. It is very smooth and the trigger pull is light.

Here is the blem on the stock. (not a big deal to me)

That is great. The blem is insignificant. You'll add your own souvenirs soon enough if you shoot it. Good looking rifle there.

WT,

Very nice indeed. As Mike said, the blem is not a show stopper. We are looking forward to you mounting some glass and loading up some rounds.

I know, what blemish, for $450, I think I did okay. I just hope I can make it shoot.

It will shoot. I have the same rifle in a 7RM. It shoots way better than it should. I can't wait to see how it looks all set up with optics and such. Very nice rifle for 450.00. I think you did really well. That little bit of checkering flattening isn't too bad at all for a rifle that is over 20+ years old. Looks like a great rifle.

I know some folks are a little hesitant about the Post 64 action, but man, they are accurate and darned near like the Remington action. Never had a single issue with mine and it has shot just about everything really well. I would bet yours will shoot well. Scotty

Great buy! If you really dislike the checkering ding, it may be either repairable or at least you can make it less noticeable. If it's an actual gouge with wood gone vs. a flattening due to being banged into, that determines the solution. If it is just flattened, I've used one of those homeowner steam cleaners with the small tips. I hit it for up to 15 seconds or so, then let it cool and give it a chance to swell back out. That done several times over 10 minutes or so makes a noticeable difference. The steam will find it's way through most finishes on checkering. Then I take a single line checkering tool and just touch it up a little. 2-3 super light coats of Tru-Oil with a toothbrush and it's done.
I enjoy the memories represented by some of these battle scars, too, but prefer to make my own!
If you don't want to take on this kind of work, I suggest the toothbrush stock finish anyway. It will make the whole area have the same sheen, as dings usually change the surface finish.

My 2 cents.

Darn right man! You got a great deal and like has been said, if you use it well she will have a few more beauty marks appear here and there. It makes them even more beautiful to have been used and have some battle scars. IMHO
