I want to hunt elk...

Ah.....the Glorious 12th.
Over here, that date marks the start of grouse shooting.
Not that I've ever done it, - it's just too too expensive - you need a big wad to participate.
Cheers.

Now, Elmer, you'll have to explain. Grouse here are plentiful and shot with a .22 (or a shotgun). The hunting license is very cheap.

D day is August 12.

D Day is for "Dead Antelope" day?

Deadline for applications for South Dakota.... When I cant go it takes a little while 'til I'm fit to live with. It gets worse.... our wedding anniversary is the first weekend in October. I "took her" antelope hunting on our first anniversary :(  BIG stupid mistake. It must be love. Ive had to choose every year for the last 24. Pay for it every year one way or the other. I want to hunt..... too bad she dosent enjoy. CL

Hope you draw CL. Need to see that little Savage put across another antelope. Scotty

We've all been there. If it is any consolation, it gets better as our ladies age. I'm pulling for you to draw.

I know what you're saying here Cloverleaf - My wife's birthday is 2nd week of October...........clashes with the Red Deer rut here in the UK.
I keep being absent for her b/day and it hasn't gone un-noticed!
I'm really not sure our ladies get any more 'understanding' with age though, it always seems 'complicated' getting an escape pass !!!

I can't really explain about the cost of grouse shooting here in UK DrMike. I know the numbers of grouse have been falling year on year, mainly due to poor land management. i.e. no heather burning on the moorland, greater predation.
We don't shoot them with rimmy's over here.....it's all syndicated driven shoots or rough shooting with shotguns. Very tightly controlled. Grouse & Partridge shooting,....you need a very healthy wallet!

Outside of small shoot gatherings who rear & keep their own birds - be they duck, pheasant, partridge,...the cost of this type of shooting commercially is very high indeed. Starting at £500/$800 + per person per day & for some of the more expensive shoots, very very much higher.

Just a small non-profit duck & pheasant shoot sees costs of £160/$260 per person per day. This is buying in poults (800 or so) & keeping the feeders topped up so the birds stay on the land for around 3-4 days shooting in November & December. Around £5500/$9000 a year.

The cost of the grouse shoot for a couple of years would easily pay for a non-resident grizzly hunt with first class accommodations. That's pretty steep. It certainly makes me appreciate the hunting opportunities in North America.

I have to say, the vast array of quarry you have available to hunt over there in North America/Canada is truly fascinating.
Whether or not I'll do more hunting than I already have in PA, remains to be seen.
Mind is willing, body not as it used to be!
Cheers, Tom

Cloverleaf don't feel too bad. I got married this past October 23rd. On November 6th, we were on our "huntingmoon". She likes hunting and loves me enough that just days after getting home this November, we'll head back to the hills for our "huntingmoon anniversary". At least this time we'll spend the first couple days in a hotel then I'll tough it out with my buddies in the tent. A hotel will be good for the first couple nights for this big wuss after leaving 100 degree desert heat in October. After 6 months of sand, sun, and no fun .....I want to hunt! yeah...hunt

I did much the same thing a few years ago. A few weeks after coming home from Afghanistan, I took the wife on a black bear hunt in Idaho. She had a blast doing it! Scotty

Thanks guys...Im such Whinner! Now lets see where did Guy start us off too.....Ah yes, "The Great Stag"..... tell us more about ELK.... :) CL
