I was thinking .338-06?

Jerry,

That is one sweet rifle, do you happen to know what it weighs "all up"? I'm sure I could look up the barrel length as well, but I hope you'll tell me?

Thanks!

Jerry, that was just mean and uncalled for! Holy smokes, now that is a nice rig! Your load sounds excellent too! What a hammer.

It is GREAT to see the 338-35 Whelens and 35 Whelen's making a slight comeback. They are really some excellent rounds with alot more juice than alot of folks give them credit for. Scotty

An individual could do a whole lot worse than a 338-06. Again, since you threw elk into the mix, that rifle rises pretty high in recommendations.

Jerry, that is a sweet looking rifle, made all the sweeter by the accuracy you report.

taylorce,

Fully dressed with 24 inch barrel, scope, sling and (4) rounds weighs in at 9.2 pounds. Recoil is approximately .280 Ackley. Trigger is one of the best I have ever felt right at (3) pounds. It is a real head turner on the bench. At 200 and 300 yards it rings the heavy steel gong with much authority.

When I ordered the rifle I was hoping for the perfect gun. I am not disappointed. With 2500 pounds of energy at 200 yards I would not hesitate to shoot anything in North America. The E-Tip retains 95% of it weight. Best description would be a well swung sledgehammer.

Thats the best looking hammer I have ever seen!

Jerry,

I'm hoping to come in at least a full pound less than you with my build. I sure hope my rifle will shoot as well as that rifle you have. 2875 fps is an impressive number from a 200 grain bullet.

You aren't kidding about that. I am not sure how much better I could do outta my 338WM. That may warrant a load workup for me though. Scotty

I get 2880 with the 200 grain Hornady SP and 56.1 grains of RL-15 using CCI 200 primers and Norma brass. I'm a full grain IIRC under Hornady max load for this bullet. However the bullet is a lot shorter than the 200 grain ET and doesn't take up any powder room at all. Getting that speed with a full four grains less of powder and a much longer bullet is amazing to me.

It sorta makes sense to me as Nosler recommends using the mid loads as max and still attaining regular speeds. I am kinda intrigued to try them out in the 300WSM. Scotty

taylorce1,

The barrel used by Nosler is a Pac-Nor chrome -moly. Using Barnes CR-10 cleans up as slick as a mirror. Did not get anywhere near hot. As much as 10 minutes between groups. Used Nosler method to break-in. Shot (3) three rounds with 52.5 grains RL-15. They chronographed at 2802, 2796, and 2808. Approx. 75 FPS slower and the group was right at one inch. The E-Tip is seated .100" off the lands. They like a lot of jump. I think the the Federal Gold Medal Match primers might be a key component.

Good luck to all. The 200 grain E-Tip is a marvelous bullet.

Jerry - terrific rifle - even if it's not a .30-06...

Seriously - that's a great rifle. Good looking, powerful and accurate. Hard combo to beat.

Sweet rifle !!!!

I built mine (338-06 Ackley Improved) in 2008 off a Sako m75 Greywolf that was a new 25-06. My gunsmith ordered in a PacNor supermatch-grade stainless #5 barrel. Cut to 24", fluted, powdercoated. Has a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 in Gunmetal grey mounted in Sako Optilock ringmounts. Weighs in the same as a factory Sako m75 Greywolf "V" action caliber (7mmRM/300WM/338WM).

Clip hold 5 +1 in the chamber. I built it to shoot heavier bullets. It loves 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's. Was a dream gun for me for 2-3 few years till I found the donor rifle.

I remember when you first started talking about that rifle. It turned into one beautiful shooting iron for sure. I've thought seriously about the AI but decided I just don't need to do it in my build.

taylorce1,

Never noticed that you are based out of Colorado Springs. There is some fantastic elk country around there. Late 80's and early 90's hunted out of Westcliffe. Took several really nice 6X6's. The Sangre de Cristos is one of the world's most beautiful sights at sunrise. Also one of the coldest places I have ever been. One night down to -31 degrees at 9000 feet. Next day did not see anything move, no birds, no squirrels, no elk, not even a fresh track with two feet of new snow.

Good luck. Wonderful country and lots of elk.
