My son shot this buck Sunday morn. We finally had some rain the last couple of days. It was a nice 4x4 with small kickers at the bases. Shot was about 125 down hill, kind of trotting / lopping towards the timber. He pulled the trigger and nothing happened. I told him he better hurry and shoot. He cycled the action and he shot, hitting it in the neck piling it up instantly.
That first trigger pull could have been disastrous. Unknown to him or me he grabbed a "dummy round" I had used to verify COAL and still fitting into the clip. It had a live primer. I explained that this could have been a very bad situation. I don't know if a primer could push the bullet into the barrel and then the next round firing would blow the barrel or not but that's the scenario we discussed as a possibility.
We also saw a 140ish about 22" wide - way past ears right at sunrise while we where on the wheeler still heading in to where we were going to elk hunt. I saw this buck and a doe move across the trail at the point and when we got there I saw him about to skyline himself at 50 yards. I told my son get off and go shoot that buck. We do not ride the wheeler with a round in the chamber so when he got off and was cycling the action the buck turned and all he had was the bucks back side. He then really started to leave the "building". Oh well - nice way to start the morning.
