Idea of speed?

I was wondering if you guys could give me an idea of what kind of speed Im looking at with one of my loads. I dont have access to a chronograph. My load is 54.5gr of H4831, cci 200, winchester brass, and .277 130gr AccuBond out of a 22 inch barrel.

For the 270 Win that charge weight is below Nosler's listed min. (H4831 55gn to 59gn), and it's really low for a WSM so I'm guessing you're working w/ a 270 Win.

As for velocities with H4831/H4831SC, you may see something from 2700 to 2900 with a 22" - just guessing here.

I also checked Hodgdon's site and 54 is listed starting load for the 130 TSX around 2750 w/????? barrel and w/the 130 HDY SP, 56 is listed starting load a around 2850 w/????? barrel.

With out a chrony, everyone will be guessing what king of speeds you may see.

Not very fast. Probably about 2650. It's a pretty weak load.
54.5gr would be more in the ball park for what I would expect for a charge of H4350, or IMR4831. Unless you are loading for a kid I would put some more powder in it.

The load I have for my buddy with his 270 MTN rifle with a 22" barrel and 130 gr. Partition or AccuBond is 59.0 grs. of H4831SC, Federal Large Rifle Magnum primer's, Winchester cases, and MV is about 3030 fps.

Sorry I forgot to mention that it is a 270 Win. This is also the only load with the 130gr Accubonds that I could get to shoot accurately. I dont know how many different bullet/powder/primer/brass/seating depths/ etc I tried. I was to the point that if my last load didnt shoot the gun was going down the road. I guess I really wasnt expecting the speed to be that low.

Well it took me all last spring/summer to finally find a load that was accurate enough to meet my expectations. The rifle is a Ruger Stainless Hawkeye with a Hogue stock that came on the rifle from the factory. The forend of the stock is pretty flimsy so im thinking that might have cause some of my problems. I tried probably 5 different powders, a couple different primers, tried winchester, remington and, once fired federal brass. Accuracy wasnt horrible with higher powder charges but they were 1.5"-2". I wanted under half an inch. I guess my load is fast enough though. My buddy used my rifle to kill two deer and worked great on both of them.

Yea, that forarm could be an issue. Back in High School I had issue with a couple of friends Ruger M77's. Both went sub MOA once I floated the barrels myself. Some of the Hogue overmolds can cause issues as well.

In general I'd say you are on the right track.
Stick with the Win brass, H4831, and cci 200 primers.
Remember BT's almost always shoot better the AB's.
Here are a few nodes that shoot well with the above mentioned components in my 22" Wichester.
130gr BT's and 60.5 gr H4831
140gr BT and 57 OR 59 gr of H4831
150's and 58gr H4831.

These are all loaded to magazine length, and you will notice they are all near max loads as well.

I can't shoot Sierra's in my .270, it just doesn't like them...4" groups.

Another fix for some .270's is the old Speer flat base bullets. IME if a .270 Win won't shoot either nosler BT or spear flat base, it's time for a trip to the smith.

I just orderd a new Winchester Featherweight 270Win a couple weeks ago and it should be coming in pretty soon. So hopefully this Featherweight will not give me the trouble that the Ruger did. I was ready to pull my hair out and sell the dang thing. Maybe Ill just buy a different stock for my Ruger and go from there. Its served me well over the last few years shooting 130gr Federal Fusions.

Something tells me you are going to like the new Featherweight!!

If the Ruger was mine, I would do exactly what you suggested. Put a new stock on it, float the barrel, and make sure it was nicely bedded.

With that load I am thinking 2600 fps. Try about 60gr of rl22 also.

DT -

If you haven't already, you might try H4350. I had a Vanguard that didn't particularly care for H4831 or RL22 either, but in my limited experience I've yet to find a .270 that didn't like 4350.

You chose well with the new Featherweight. I have the same rifle. Work your way up with H4831 with the 130 AB and you will find something (as A_S pointed out, likely near maximum) that will fit the bill. I topped out at 59.0 grains.

I would agree on all these loads. For the seating depth try 3.340 inches and see how that does.
