...338's to .40's are medium-bore, .40+ are heavy-bore, what would .22 centerfires to 8mm's be???

In my book a sub 8mm is a small bore. Medium bore is from .338-416cal and heavy bore is +450cal.

However the British in the ol days ranked the +.600cal as large bore.....
medium bore: >.600cal-.400cal....
smallbore: >400cal...
Magnum smallbore rifle with a velocity of +2,500 ft/sec
Miniature: Any smallbore the 1500 ft/Ibs or less
Express: Blackpowder smallbore or medium bore +1600 ft/sec.

.30 cal is sometimes referred to as "full bore."

I've heard that mostly in match-shooting circles. British term perhaps?

I don't know but I can't see a 30 caliber is a small bore I think full bore is more like it

.30 cal seems to be laying right about in the middle of the pack so I'm thinking medium bore since we have small medium and large.

I agree with Charlie. I have read where 30 cal is considered a small bore.

...NRA Rules state that "small bore is .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle...

...common usage generally puts .338-40/.41cals into medium bores, .45+ into "big bores"...

...so, what's left for centerfires from .17 to .32???

Small bore for anything 8mm and under, mediums from .338 to 375 and boomers over .400.

Just my warped interpretations of it all...

Since we are permitting warped interpretations, I'd say small bore is anything smaller than what I'm holding at the moment. Medium bore is whatever I'm holding at the moment. Big bore is anything larger than what I'm holding at the moment. It really is quite subjective; and the addition of monolithic bullets has changed what is required for a clean kill, in any case.

Like Doc says.
I grew up in the NRA system, so first adopted their small bore definition as used in target shooting. Then, in Wyoming, I subjectively lumped anything too small or anemic according to the game regs for big game into small bore. I only wished similar definition methodology applied when I went clothes shopping - it would be nice to even be a 'Large' again  EE2

When I was mule deer hunting, up in a deep, nasty canyon, not far from Yellowstone, hiking out several miles with a boned-out mulie on my back, and found myself walking on tracks from a grizzly sow and cub...

My .25-06 deer rifle was ABSOLUTELY a small bore!

I was really wishing for at least a .30-06, and preferably a .375...

Yep, that .25-06 was relegated to popgun status, I'm sure.
Guy, I think I knew her as well! At least we have similar stories. Always grateful she was just out teaching her cub decent manners.
