Anybody try 4166 in their 7-08? I have 3-1/2 pounds of it, and I'm Hoping to try it with 140 NP's in my nephew's 22" XPR for him to bring to Alabama hog hunting in Jan. I Can't seem to find Varget, Big Game, RL-16/15, or pretty much any of the usual players..I also have scads of RL-17 I'm also looking at running.

Not in 7-08, as I don't load that caliber. But I've found it to be very good in .243, .30-06, etc. I would expect it to work very well in 7-08.

Some example groups:

.243 - 4 shot group

.30-06 - 4 shot group

Dang, That's excellent. How were the speeds?

.243 load data:
39.0gr IMR 4166
70gr Nosler Varmageddon
COL 2.680"
Hornady brass
WLR primer
3155 fps

.30-06 load data:
50.0gr IMR 4166
150gr Hornady SST
COL 3.250"
Winchester brass
Fed 210M primer
2711 fps

I know you didn't mention them, but my buddy who does load for his 7-08 has had good success with IMR 4350 and 4895. I like 4166 for its versatility, much like 4064.

Thanks. I guess if it comes down to it I'll order some other powders to try, but if I can get it to 1" and decent speed, my nephew will be happy with his FREE hog load that came at my expense...

I had good results with it in .308WIN and 6.5CM, so I think 7-08 is pretty much a given. Speeds are good, about like Varget and should make a good load in a 7-08

Hogdon lists 4166 with 140gr bullets in the 7-08 as follows:

min -- 39.3 - 2,665
max -- 42.3 - 2,841

Thanks.. Yep, I was going off that and Sierra shows 41.4 as max with their 140 SP at 2810.

What was the barrel length they used to gather this data?

Both Hogdon & Sierra show a 24" barrel was used

Ok, thanks a lot. I load for a friend that has a 7-08. I am going to try this powder out & see how it performs.

His is a Thompson Pro Hunter. I believe it’s got a 28” barrel.

if you have RL17 , I'd give it a try before buying other powders . it will give the most velocity in the 7-08's with 140 gr bullets . I use it in my one rifle 24" bbl 3080 FPS and great accuracy . I just looked at quickload . the IMR4166 looks to be a decent choice of powder . it gives a good case fill , but it's about 200 FPS less than RL17 . I have three 7-08's . I use RL17 in one , IMR4064 in one , and a slightly reduced load of H4894 with a 120 B-tips in the other one . it's a very easy cartridge to load for , it seems most combo's shoot well .

Thanks, Jim! I picked up an 8 lb'r a while back when I couldn't find other powders locally, thought I could keep it on hand for a backup choice because folks are getting good results with it in several cartridges.

I know this is a little late but for those who look later maybe this will help them. This data was developed in a 7mm-08 14" Pachmayr Dominator single shot pistol conversion. Components are Winchester Brass, Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip @ 2.800", Fed GM 210M primers. Measured by Labradar. IMR 4166 powder weighed individually, not thrown.

43.4 gr, 2570 fps, 22 ES, 10 SD
43.8 gr, 2604 fps, 28 ES, 12 SD
44.2 gr, 2624 fps, 19 ES, 7 SD
44.6 gr, 2658 fps, 8 ES, 3 SD
45 gr, 2690 fps, 12 ES, 4 SD

The last 3 loads shot very well at 100 yards with all groups 1.5" and slightly less. This is with a Leupold 2-6 pistol scope and off a sandbag.
