I have used IMR 4350 for many years in my 338 Win with 225 A Frames.

I plan on giving IMR 4451 a try............anyone tried it with 338 Win and 225gr.

Not yet but I'm looking to try it with 185 and 210 grain bullets.

Just wondering. When you use IMR4350 with the 225gr A-Frames how many grains do you use and the FPS you get.
I used a great load last time we went to South Africa but found out it was +4grs over book max. But it gave no extraction problems and would put 5 shots into a very small hole at 100 yards. The max book load was slow for my rifle and RL22 did much better in speed and accuracy.

71.0 of IMR 4350 with 225 A Frames in WW Brass with WLRM primers
I have a cronie but never put it on, used the load long before I bought it, and just stayed with it.
I kinda like the old saying speed is great but accuracy kills.

That was my load also but it is 4grs over book max which showed 67grs and 2715FPS. With 71grs I got 2834FPS & SD9 with my Ruger M77 and with 67grs I only got 2617FPS and SD18. The 71grs shot 5 rounds into a cloverleaf group only using a sand bag at 100 yards.
I was concerned about being 4grs over the book. Have you had any problems with that load? I am headed back to Africa and would like to use it but do not want to blow up the rifle.

Lord No......used this load for 20 years.
I am on my 3rd 338 Win and all 3 guns shot this well.
That A Frame is sure a good bonded bullet......very happy with it. I limit my shots on moose to 500 yards since the AFrames BC is not stellar.

Note: Real load data you have to go to Speer reloading manuals (No 7) in the 60's. Current load data from the 1970's to current is watered down.

The new Nosler manual shows 71.5g with 225g bullets. I was shooting 72g in mine giving 2880fps before switching to RL17.

Hell I spent months working up new loads that were in the swift book. Now I think I will go back to my tried and proven 71grs of IMR4350.
I am headed back to South Africa in May for more PG and the 338 is one rifle I will take again.
Now I have to choose between a 257W using 120gr A-Frames or a 264win mag using 140gr A-Frames as my 2nd rifle. Hard to choose one or the other.
Last time I took a 30-06.

Thanks for the 338 info. I know I tried some data that worked well with 225gr Hornady bullets but got sticky bolt(really bad) & flattened primers when the powder load was used with the A-Frame bullets. That is what had me concerned about being +4grs with the 4350.

Over the years I had several 257 WBY and a 264 win...........not to excited about the 264.
The quarter bore with 100gr X Barnes was a sure good med game rifle with light recoil......killed like lighting.

The only 3 bullets I shoot in my 338 Win has been 225 Nosler Part, 225 Speer GS and 225gr Swift A frames . Like others said Nosler shows 71.5 as max with 225gr Part.

The 225gr Hornady worked very well in 338-06.

I have used it in the 338 Mag with 250gr Accubonds, 250gr Part, 200gr. AccuBond, and 210gr. Sciroccos. Good Accuracy although I didn't push it hard yet. Chronographing it, I find it's slightly slower that H4350 although the published data indicates it is faster. ???

Most of the time I disregard the Vel numbers in the current manuals.........they are usually higher than actual tested vel.
