Cool thanks. Some day I will know what it means to blueprint an action.

Corey

The action is squared up perfectly to the axis of the bore and the bolt lugs lapped. This allows the entire lug to square up with the receiver, eleminating any torquing of the action.
Then you have a barrel fitted for perfect alignment.
This will give you the best chance to wring out very good accuracy.

Corey,

An '06 Ackley conversion is quite easy. Your gunsmith needs to have a '06 Ackley reamer so he can simply run it into your existing chamber and then set the headspace back, .004" IIRC. The .004" set back is so when you chamber standard '06 cases their is a slight "crush" fit when closing the bolt handle and you don't inadvertantly get excess headspace when the firing pin knocks the case forward at the moment it hits the primer.

From their it is just a matter of fireforming your cases which can be a slightly controversial subject. One method is to fire live 30-06 rounds through it, thus forming the brass to the new chambers. This is a fine method for those who wish to simply practice/plink with the loads in question as well for those who wish to actually hunt with their fireforming loads. The other method is to use an inert filler thusly; Prime your new cases with any Lg rifle or pistol primer, charge with about 12-13 gr of Bullseye pistol primer followed with about 1/4 sheet of TP (yes, toilet paper) which is tamped down against the powder with a #2 pencil which has had the eraser removed and is flat. Now, take common every day Cream of Wheat or grits and carefully fill to about 1/2 way up the neck. Tamp/compress another 1/4 sheet of TP and you are set to cheaply fireform your '06 case to '06 AI specs. After spending $500 for a new Lilja barrel and rebarreling job I did not care to shoot bullets down the bore, potentially shortening the barrels life.

Which brings another item to light. You could use your existing barrel or run with a new custom barrel. After educating my self on barrel manufactures, I decided to go with Dan Lilja

http://www.riflebarrels.com/

Great rep, decent turn around time. The only downer to a Lilja barrel is he does not do any barrel work. He only makes the barrels. He can suggest some great 'smiths to chamber, thread, crown and remount the new tube to your action. My old '06 barrel was shot out after 24 years thus I decided to send Lilja my old barrel with instructions to create the same contour so it would fit my existing stock. My original 22" barrel had a custom contour. It was an extra $35 charge but paid for it's self several times over since I didn't have to pay to have my barrel channel opened up to fit a different contoured barrel. Once I got both my old and new barrels back, I took it to Barnes bullets in American Fork, Utah (I live about 20 miels away and don't worry, I've yet to shoot Barnes; I'm a Nosler fan) where their in house gunsmith, Ian Jensen, in his off time, chambered, threaded, crowned and mounted the new 26" stainless barrel. The extra 4" of barrel length only added about 2 oz to an old familiar friend of 24 years. The rest is just .5" to .75" groups.
