It Could Be a Shooter

I managed to make it to the range yesterday to work with a customer's rifle. I took my new 280 Remington with me to do some load development. This is the 50th Anniversary Edition that I picked up recently.

I was shooting some 139 grain Hornady GMX bullets, trying a few powders that I don't use often. With Rottweil R905, I developed some exciting velocities, but as the charge approximated maximum, the groups opened from 0.86 inches (3016 +/- 8 fps) to 2.21 inches (3169 +/- 13 fps). There would be nothing wrong for whitetail, mule deer and black bear with a load at 3016 fps shooting sub-MOA.

With ReLoder 17, I generated some fine velocities and excellent groups. At a maximum charge, I was generating 3035 +/- 10 fps with a group of 0.56 inches.

At my lowest charge, the group was 0.81 inches. There may be possibility for this load.

Though the velocities were not great with A4350, the groups were very nice. The best group was 0.37 inches and the velocity was about 2600 fps.

At a maximum charge, the group has opened to 0.56 inches though velocity was still only about 2700 fps.

Bear opens next weekend, so I shot a couple of my hunting loads to see what they were doing in my other 280 (Winchester Featherweight). The 140 grain Combined Technologies BST is launched at 2801 +/- 11 fps and grouped at 0.85 inches. Yeah, that'll do. In the same rifle, a 150 BT charged with IMR 4350 gave me 2516 +/- 10 fps and a group size of 0.56 inches. A couple of hunting loads in my 7 RM give me 2999 +/- 12 fps and 0.93 inches with a 160 grain TSX and 2984 +/- 26 fps with a group of 0.94 inches with a 160 grain Fail Safe. In all, I believe I'm ready. I'll do some more work with this new 280. I hate to admit that a Remington could grow on me, but I suppose I'm easy to please.

Nice shooting. The LSS would be quite the tool with the RL 17 load.

Mike, I gotta tell ya, I don't think that gun is working out for you!

It would be best if you just sold it to me

Really though it's a beautiful gun and looks like it'll be a shooter!

Looks like you found a winner, my hunting partner used a Sako in 280 for years ( now re-barreled in 280AI ) and it always liked the lower end of powder charge in almost anything he tried

My Featherweight in 280 has taken quite a few deer (both mulies and whitetail). It had a slow barrel until I had pushed almost 300 rounds through it. Likewise, it was quite a rough barrel until it had at least 250 rounds through it. I love that Featherweight, but this Remington could become beloved at this rate. I'll continue to work with it.

I am thinking that you could carry one in each hand, just in case. Never know you might need a lot of firepower, GREAT groups !!

Anyone would be pleased shooting groups like that, don't cut yourself short by telling everyone you are easy! So you are saying there is a chance for Remington Mike? I'm glad to see that they are turning out a few good rifles still. Maybe there is hope after all!

David,

This one was built one year only a couple of years back. I have two CDLs that are less exciting. While I may be able to make them shoot, they are a vexing problem.

Glad your LSS is working out and shooting well. The more I see 280's the more I like them. I have come full circle a little and really like all the 06 based cartridges, other than the 30-06! I still think Remington has excellent lines of rifles, just not happy with their actual gunsmithing. To be honest, the CDL and Winchester Featherweights are two of my favorite rifles. I can only hope Remington pulls their stuff together before they go the way of the M70 and we lose them for a few years!

Despite being handsome rifles, I can't see CDLs displacing my Featherweights. However, this particular laminate stocked 280 just may find a permanent place in my safe. I'll be focusing on 150 grain E-Tips in the near future. I've done some workups a few weeks back, and the results were promising. I'll keep you posted on results as I continue tests.

Unless you're the whitetail, mule deer or black bear...

And with RL17 giving duplicate performance, you look to be ready for spring. Good work!

Nice shooting Mike...I'm surprised the R17 did as well as it did. I didn't think that powder was developed/meant for the 06' calibers. Guess it goes to show that you shouldn't write a powder off because of what the "talking heads" say.

I have not observed this performance in either my 30-06 or my Featherweight 280, though reports abound of others obtaining those sorts of velocities. This is the first time I've observe this velocity. The powder has a burn rate approximating IMR4831, so I may need to review some of my older data to see if I've given it a fair shake.

Hegland,

I'm looking for an excuse to use some of this R905 that has sat in my powder magazine for several years. I haven't seen a lot of Rottweil powders here in North America, and it did give good performance. I've worked up a couple of loads in my 7mm RM with this powder, but this is the first time it has worked well in any of my 280s.

Dr. Mike,
That is some is good looking shooting. That 280 is ready for some action I'd say.

Don

Yeah, Mike, but it is a Remington. :) I believe it'll do, though.
