Shooting a friends rifle- or more accurately hunting with it. Was able to get out for a disabled sportsmens hunt (Shoot) this past weekend. In memory of my friend, I was determined to use the rifle he left for me. (as discussed above). Another rifle in my favorite 250-3000 Savage. Load was: New Remington Brass. CCI 200 Large rifle primer, 87gr Speer Hot Core over 39.5 gr. of IMR 4350. Books suggest @2800 fps. (C'mon Nosler give me somthing to work with in a 1:14 twist)
From a blind, I watched a pheasant walk out of the tall grass and brush behind me. A little while later a large Doe walked through the same opening. Couldn't get on the large doe that came by. When she made me and took off this button buck stopped his chest in front of the cross hairs of the old weaver 4x.
The rifle barked (more accurately boomed inside the small box blind) and sent the hot core high into the chest behind the shoulder. My partner stepped it off at 18 long steps. My guess would be high lungs Which were destroyed and spinal shock. Little buck sat back on his but and tipped over Kicked a few times and was done. Always rewarding when some one else has to do your tracking.
This was "herd control" in a 300+ acre county park an hour north of Mpls. The county and DNR set aside this and several other opportunities through out Mn each year for folks with impairments. Doctor's auth., a state approved permit to shoot from a vehicle (This hunt was from permanent blinds) and a minimum accuracy/ proficiency is required. I had assisted with sight ins and qualifying for this group of folks for years through my time with the local gun club. Things change. so this year I decided to try a hunt with them. So, in the end I would have much preferred the bigger Doe, and a longer shot. But this was a good shot, an immediate kill, a unique and sentimental rifle shared with a good friend and a new hunting partner I truly enjoy, in a new environment. I Got out again, What could be better? Oh BTW he is delicious! CL
