It's finally underway!

Good logic Scotty. If it's a shooter and ain't broke don't fix it. It's kinda like my M77 280 it's not all that pretty and got a few wounds on it but it shoots so darn well I won't touch it or sell it. That would be a sin.

It takes a serious beating in the woods, but it doesn't seem to complain.

It doesn't complain because it knows it is cradled by hands that normally cradle Winchesters. It doesn't complain because it knows that should it do so it will be replaced ... by the rifleman's rifle. It doesn't complain because it understands that it has no choice but to perform lest it be traded for a (gasp) Savage or a Ruger.

Good point Mike! I never thought of it like that, but now I know why it stays in line!

Fear of the unknown (consequences) keeps many rifles in line.

Maybe that is why the single Savage rifle in my safe is so well behaved? It is surrounded by Model 70's, Sako's, Custom Mauser's and a Weatherby Mark V. I guess the Savage figures that it had better toe the mark or else!

X2, I have sold guns I wish I would have kept, it is good to think twice about selling an accurate dependable gun it's replacement may end up being a dud, don't ask me how I know :(

Goes back to two principles I live my life by. KISS Keep It Simple Stupid and If it ain't broke don't fix it.
With that one its very versitile and dependable so it makes a perfect backup rifle in any situation weather it be mice to bear. Plus its my first big bore rifle so it will never leave me.

I really can't say nothing bad about a Ruger Mike. Everyone I have shoots. Now they might not be quite as pretty as a Winchester. But they are also very affordable and between the two make up the difference in beauty.

I can't kick Ruger too hard. I have three that accompany me afield from time-to-time. They shoot quite well. My major complaint is that they aren't Winchesters.

They might be better!! I do like their safety better. From a design point if you lock the cocking piece with the safety it can't fail can it? If it does you have more issues that a faulty safety. But in all honesty my safety is my finger I don't trust them, as I have seen them fail. As with any prevention device or safety on any equipment. A safety is a mechanical device that will fail! As for bolt release I like the Ruger better also you can't beat that old Mauser style. If it was in a really pretty stock like most Winchesters are you couldn't tell them apart!

Except for the fact that the Ruger action is a steel investment casting and Winchester is a forged steel action. There are mechanical differences in grain structure and tensile yield. They do look similar though.

I was able to get a very good deal on a used Leupold M8 6X42 scope today. I decided I wanted a fixed 6 on this gun, simple, rugged and reliable :) should arrive next week sometime. Was on the look out for a Leupold 6X36, 6X42 or Burris FFII 6X40 on HuntingBC and a guy was willing to sell this one to fund a Redfield Revolution 3-9X40 for his 22-250.

It's nice when things come together the only thing that might need some attention now is since the action is being blueprinted I may need to bed the recoil lug again on my Mcmillan Edge stock. If it needs it it won't be that hard to do. I have always wanted a 6X42 scope it seems to be a good balance between being rugged, enough magnification for most hunting and they are supposed to have pretty good light gathering abilities too, can't wait till it's all done :)

Good score Gerry. That sounds like a great set up. Can't beat the simplicity of it, that is for sure.

gerry that rifle is going to be a tack driver :)
I can't wait until you have photos of her and a range report or 2.
The animals in your neck of the woods are going to be real nervous this fall

Blessings,
Dan

I talked to the gunsmith a couple of days ago and they were going to start working on the barrel, it should be done pretty soon. These guys are part time smiths but I have heard very good things about them for quite a few years now, they were highly recommended. My Leupold scope came in, it turned out to be a 6X36 instead of a 6X42, it was still a really good deal and the gun will just end up being a bit lighter. Maybe when I get the new 280/30-06/7mm RM, not sure which one yet, it will get a new Leupold 6X42 which are supposed to be very bright in low light and very tough should be a really good match for a goat/deer gun. I sent in my Chrony to be fixed and used their upgrade program they have, and they shipped out a new Beta Master, should have it late next week.

It all sounds good, Gerry. Perhaps I'll get to see your new and growing arsenal. Good move on the Chrony.

Now, that's just mean. I wish I could make the trek over, and now, with Chinook in the systems, would be the ideal time.
