It's gonna be a custom

Im going to be saving every penny for my next rifle, because I am going custom. I like the idea of exclusivity, and I think it will be worth it in the long run. I have my 7mm08 to hold me over until the funds are up.

Going for either a 30-06 or 35 Whelen, and leaning towards the 06 because of ammo availability.

As for the rifle; I am going to save for either a Nosler 48 Custom or Montana 1999 Ridgeline. Both are in the same price range and are exactly what I am looking for; all stainless steel, cerakoted, lightweight, and will last for a very long time.

Either cartridge will serve you well for most hunting here in North America. Either rifle is highly desirable, exuding quality in every facet. Good move.

When I bought the M48 Custom it was one of the best investments I've ever made- required liquidation of most of my gun collection some meager cash. The price tag was fearful; I was leery of the WSM chambering... fears and concerns all unfounded.

It's an incredibly nice HUNTING rifle that I've taken hunting all over Alaska, in all kinds of weather. I've got a lot of confidence in it and to date it has been quite simply a killing machine.

I'd get one in '06 without hesitation (or even a Whelen if it floats your boat) and go hunting.

The one thing that is separating me from the Nosler is the fact that its not CRF. I have found I much prefer CRF on a rifle, hence why the Montana is getting the nod.

I have plenty of time to think this one through, $3000+ is a lot of money to save, and it will be worth it in the long run. Either rifle in 30-06 and any game in NA is in big trouble.

Now I will have plenty of time to get my 7mm08 out more and get more game under its belt too.

You'll be in great shape with either rifle or cartridge. I think the 35 Whelen is alot of fun with alot of bullet weight options for heavier game, but nothing the 30-06 won't do either. I think you'll have a rifle that means alot and does all your hunting well.

I agree Top. I have made my decision; as much as I love CRF rifles, I am going to go for a Nosler rifle in 30-06. I have been lusting after one and after chatting with Shawn from Nosler, its a done deal. When the money is up, he will be getting the call.

I intend to run either 150-165 grn bullets for deer and hogs, then if I hunt anything bigger I will load up either 180 or 200 grain bullets.

I think your making a wise choice buddy. That'll be a great hunting companion.

You'll not regret it! These are just great rifles!

The whole controlled round feed thing is overblown IMO, a properly tuned push feed is going to work well as will a properly tuned controlled round feed. I have had both kinds jam on me in the past but have had no problems with Remington's and Browning's, the more refined Nosler should feed very well.

I do believe you will be quite happy, as much as I love the Whelen a 30-06 loaded with a 200 or 220 gr Partition is going to be a fantastic load for any big animals like grizzly and moose and a 165-180 gr bullet will work for an all around load.

I'm inclined to agree. I've hardly ever had a problem with either type but when I did, it was the CRF rifles that had the problems. I do prefer CRF if given my druthers but at the same time feel that using a PF rifle is no handicap. All my CRF rifles are on Mauser actions. :) 8)

Yeah, same here, my Whelen feeds real slick actually. Never had an issue with it, nor do I expect any.

Again, Gerry nails it, a 200 grain PT or 220 loaded up properly would take a whole lot of big, heavy game and not be as short legged as most would think.

For a 30-06, do you all prefer a 22" or 24" barrel? I am also contemplating iron sights. They just seem nostalgic on a 30-06.

Also, I have a 2.5-8 Zeiss with Turrets coming. Think that would be an ideal scope for the rifle?

I would probably rather have a 24", but I wouldn't cry a bit over either one to be honest.

I think the Zeiss will be fine AJ, if not, I am sure you can unload that scope pretty quickly..
