First buyer backed out and I was able to slide in behind him. I picked up a NIB Ruger77 Hawkeye(wood and blued) for just under $500. Now gotta get some dies! Oh, and some 225NAB or PT's. I'll get some picts up when I receive the gun. What do you think I ought scope it with? I have a 3x9 Minox coming from Songdog or I might put a VX3 2.5x8 on it it?
Scott

Scott, Congratulations, that sounds like a good deal you got there. The 3-9x40 Minox would be perfect for what you would want to do. Having used both the 225 gr AccuBond and Partition I can tell you they are both great all around loads, deer sized game all the way to moose :)

But Scott, I was just going to sell you my Tikka 338!

Good choice. I like the Leupy 2.5-8 as that is what is coming for mine.

Cheers

Very nice rifle you got there mister! Can't help myself..... I think that 2.5-8 Leupold would be perfect! I cannot believe we have another Whelen here. Is it something in the water?

Another smart man, I think it is catchy
I am a leupold man so I am placing a VX-6 on mine. I have heard nothing but good things about Minox, I would go to the ZA-5 if you decide on a Minox.

Blessings,
Dan

Must be, must be!

Scott,

Good grab. Either scope you named will work just fine. I think the Minox will look great atop the rifle; but then, I'm biased.

David,
I believe it's something in the air - something like spider monkey fumes. :p You must give credit where it is due!
If it makes you feel any better I'm also eyeing a 6mm heavy barreled NIB Ruger77 MK1.

Scott

You guys really need to stop. The want list is growing. I might even have to take a hiatus from this place so I don't buy anything I don't need. Heck I call Facebook the devil's site. I don't know what I will be calling this place!!

Great snag Scott you can't go wrong for $500!

Great grab Scott! I have the 3x9 Minox Z3 w/#4 reticle on mine and really like the set up alot. Man, get your dies and hold on. Don't forget about the 250 Speer and 225 SGK for the Whelen. The Speer could be used for anything you would use the 250 PT for and it is cheap. the 225 SGK would be a decent bullet, but I am not sure if I would trust it completely at Whelen speeds, but it will allow you to do some load work and swap it out for the PT or AB. Most Whelen's don't seem to be ultra fussy.

Great score buddy. Us Whelen guys are stacking up. Wait till you get a good load and do some dialing. The old boy will surprise you out at 300-600 yards if you dial it in. Plus, when it hits, you know what happened!

Can't wait to hear about your load work. RL15/Varget seem to get all it's got, with RL15 being my favorite with 225/250's..

That's the way I would roll. I have a VX3 2.5-8x waiting on a shelf in my office to replace the Burris 2-7x that's on it now. I need to get off my lazy butt and order some S&K mounts for it.

Congrats on the Whelen purchase. I've had mine for a couple months now. I'm still working on wringing out the accuracy, but the thing sure is going to be a hammer if the water jug tests are any indication.

As far as scopes go, I'd go with the Minox. I put the same Leupold you are considering on my Whelen. It is a very nice scope but, to my eyes at least, the optics are not quite as good as the Minox. I'll probably keep the VX3 on mine as it is a nice size and weight for my No. 1. On a bolt gun, I'd prefer the Minox. The ZA5 1.5-8 would be a very nice scope for the Whelen as well.

Trevor, that is the scope I was going to mount on the Whelen, but I did some horse trading and put the 3x9 on it. It is perfect..

Do you have a picture of your 35 Whelen with the scope mounted?

JD, where is the 35 Whelen owners club! I think we need it now. We have a hefty group now!

Everyone should own a Whelen or two!

I like my Whelen rifles, I just need to ad a .375 and .400 to the mix and my collection of rifles might be complete.
