Went to take Zuri for a walk. I could see it was just beginning to sprinkle rain, the moment we walked out the door she knew something was up, and so did I by her attention to only get hot on the trail to a predator! I ran inside to turn on all the outside lights. There wasn't anytime to run up stairs for my M4, but I did have a shotgun downstairs loaded with bird shot, 2 rounds, no. 6 and 8, but din't think I'd need it?

Zuri was weaving between the landscape bushes and then ran around the front of the cabin. She was pretty worked up and not a happy camper, I thought something had to have just been here? We walked towards the front of the main house under the bright lights and Zuri headed out down the driveway, I knew to call her back in as I was only wearing slippers. We walked back towards the front door and once again she got hot on the trail only this time on the other side of the landscaping bushes when all of a sudden I saw what at first I thought was a deer running in and then I saw that's a Wolf!

Mind you this is from a distance of less then 20 feet when I saw this thing come out from the darkness from around the back of the cabin right to me! I'm just glad I was in the front of the line and Zuri behind me somewhere? The moment my brain registered this is a Wolf running in I shouted out at it! I could hear the fear in my voice as it stopped no less then 8 feet away! We looked at each other for a few milliseconds as I put my arms out I crouched and yelled like the Hulk and ran right at it! It took off within the first few leaps I took at it...... only to fall as I tripped over the plywood platform I set my chronograph on, stubbing my big toe! No kidding, but I got back up to run at it again but stopped 20 feet from were I started. Then Zuri ran at me from the direction the Wolf had run to, I almost thought it was another Wolf!

We went inside and I ran up stairs for the M4. The SureFire mounted to the front is LED and on mode two can light up a football field, but I didn't see this lovely furry creature as I walked around looking for it.

So sometimes the hunter becomes the hunted, I'm just thankful it didn't get my Dog. I'll let you in on a secret, my Dogs AKC names are their first name and Dances with Wolves, and now you know why!

That is a brazen creature, Kevin. The myth is that wolves will not attack humans. However, we have recent instances of humans killed by wolves and multiple instances of humans stalked by wolves. Perhaps they were only curious, but a large creature like that is still unnerving when they appear to hunt the hunter. Good that you were alert to the nuances of the situation.

Wow, that was exciting, we have so many critters around here (not wolves) I will not take the dogs out until its light enough to see them. At night I stay close to them and we stay in the flood lights. After my encounter a couple of months ago I am seldom far into the timber without "adequate protection".

Well, I'm glad that worked out.

I'm sure most of us have, at some point, wandered outside into the dark to check on something... Leaving our flashlight & guns inside... Sigh.

Oh yeah - and my dog is all guts and no brains when it comes to big critters - he'll take in after 'em if I don't get him on the leash quickly. Was so danged glad he DIDN'T see the bear I saw 200 yds above us once when we were out for a little pre-season training. He was hot after some chukar and thankfully never noticed the bear.

So last nights adventure was an interesting event, one I'm sure I'll remember for the rest of my life. It was also the 25 anniversary of my fathers death. I wondered about that, and was there any meaning to it, only because the day my Father died I had a little chat with God. A show me you're who you say you are chat, I was immediately treated to the biggest deer I had ever seen after asking for that as proof! Not sure what this if anything had to do with that? More then likely nothing, just a wake up call maybe?

you guys need to get a grip! (-: just kidding

Dr Mike is correct, they can be aggressive but usually are not. We encounter them often and more often than not in a pack. Our dog was trained from a pup not to chase, so we do not have him on a lease. He will usually growl to get our attention rather than bark.

longrangehunter, I enjoyed your story and honestly understand how you felt, I was just joking with you above

That would sure get your heart pumping. I guess a side arm might be in order when out and about.
I am glad that there was no harm done.

Blessings,
Dan
