Lapping in Scope Rings, prior to fitting a scope

G'Day Again,

As discussed above, here are the images from the previous thread.

I usually lap my rings in epeciall on the hard kickers. I find that lapping in talley lightweights is pretty important as sometimes they can be quite out of line depending on mount holes.

I have lapped a few, but not to this extent? Usually they line up faster than that one did!

I did not use to lap my rings but a few years ago I started and lap everything. It just makes sense to help keep everything as squared up as possible to give you the best chances of making a rifle a real shooter.

I'm having a .280 AI built and I am having the gunsmith true the bolt face and action face all before the barrel is screwed on. He's making sure everything is squared and true. The wood stock has been pillar and glass bedded to give the action a perfect fit to sit in where there will be no stresses or pressure. Now hopefully it will shoot good! I cannot wait.

G'Day Fella's,

LRH, Thank You for the kind words!

If I'm able to or allowed to, I will lap the rings, regardless of if its a Hunting or a Target rifle!
As with the analogy I used in the original posting of this thread, I believe lapping the scope rings (if done correctly), is the equivalent of epoxy bedding the action to the stock of the rifle!
It allows the scope, to be located and held in as stress free a condition as you can attain, which I believe, helps to eliminate a variety of ongoing and potential future optical ailments.

G'Day Fella's,

LRH, there is nothing wrong with your memory!
And just this past week, I made a kind of start on the 6.5 project!
Here is an image of a Rem M7 stainless action, that I horse traded with a bloke I know!

He wanted the 7-08 barrel returned to him, so I removed it and as soon as I get a chance, I will be getting a PTG bolt, a fluted #3 profile,1 in 8" twist MADDCO barrel (24") and get to work on this.
I have had a slight change of plan on the 6.5 WSM after speaking with a few people.
Probably the best way to go would be the 6.5-300 Rem SAUM Wildcat but I have decided to go with the original 6.5 Rem Mag chambering instead!

It will make a nice twin for my Rem M-673 in .350Rem Mag!

Regards
Homer

I often use the TPS 7075-T6 rings which are .0002 TIR where angularity is held very tightly with no lapping required. If I was going to lap, it would be to surface grind the parallel surfaces on the base and screw mating surfaces to make them parallel.

The 6.5 SAUM has been very popular lately, GA Precision has made it very successful as a hunting round. The 6.5 Remington Mag will pair nicely with your 350 RM.
