Couldn't resist the urge to go get a little rifle practice today, the day before our nine-day mule deer season opens. Took both the 700 CDL's, .25-06 and .30-06. Have decided to hunt with the .30-06, as this rifle is new to me this year. I only shot a couple of 3-shot groups with it at 100 yards, just to check the zero and get a little last minute trigger time. One group was right at one inch, the other just over an inch. Am zeroed at 250 yards with this rifle, so the groups printed about 3" high at 100 yards.

Ammo was handloaded 165 gr Nosler Partitions over enough H4350 to generate a mellow 2800 fps from the 24" Remington barrel.

I don't mind the MOA groups at all. I shot from prone, using just the sling for stability, just like I do in the field. I'll take one MOA from a sling supported position anytime. The .30-06 is just a joy to shoot. That cushy recoil pad & good stock design take all the bite out of it. Someday I'll likely take a pound or so off that trigger, but otherwise it's a dandy rifle, just the way Remington built it.

The .25-06 & 6x Leupold is on the left, the .30-06 has the lighter colored stock and an old 2-7x Redfield "Gold Star" scope. Although old, it's a quality scope, very clear and the click adjustments are quite positive. It was on a rifle that didn't stay with me, but the scope did.

Hopefully I'll find a good mule deer buck sometime in the next few days, and blood this particular 700 CDL!

Regards, Guy

Guy,

Best of luck to you.
That is a fine looking pair of 700's.

I'll take MOA from prone any day! Excellent job, Guy. I'd say you're about set!

Always a good time to go out one more trip to the range and verify what you knew all along.

Well done Guy. Good luck on the upcoming season.

30-06 has been getting it done for ages and wish you the best on your hunt, 2 nice looking rigs as most everyone goes with synthetics and seeing some furniture is sweet

I'm jealous our White tail season doesn't come in till after Thanksgiving. But I still need to get back in shape anyway, Hoping I'll be able to go,right now I need to find a new pair of shoes since all my old ones don't fit my left foot.

Hope ya get a big one Guy. I love the way those dry side mulies taste. I took a small buck in Oak creek one time with the 165 PT at 2800 fps. It was a 50 yard shot. You could eat right up to bullet holes. Darn hard to beat the 165 PT in the 06. Pretty sure moa from prone and a sling will do just fine. Half the the time I can,t do that from a bench rest. Ha. Go get em.

One of the first mulies I took, Guy, was eating a lot of sage. My, oh my, did he ever taste good. He was on the dry side of the mountains here in BC.

Guy, my Win 70, .30-06 is the same way, well under MOA with 165 Partition loads and loping alone at about 2800 fps with the BR-2 primer. It is a rifle that is absolutely dependable which has given me zero problems in the 18 years that I have owned it. Good luck on your deer hunting tip and let us all know how you fared?

Very nice Guy. Grew pair of rifles! Love that combo. Almost tempted to find a Pre64 30-06 just to try some I your loads out.

Very sweet looking rifles. As you know I am a fan of the 30-06 and .308, so I know you will have a great time with that rifle in the field. I am still kicking myself for selling my old Redfield scope with a rifle years ago. That scope was great. Good luck.

Great writeup and pictures. Hope to see the results pics soon! Fine looking furniture, too, I agree..
