Late Season Muley

Well Done Dr. Mike. Good to see that all the "laws of nature" and Murphys coralary are working where you are. You are right, the big ones do read the regs. Glad you are OK .....been there. CL

Mike, thank you for the story & photos . I always enjoy your hunting adventures. That will go nicely with the Elk you already have in the freeze.
Now just finish it off with a nice Whitetail buck and your deer season will have ended nicely.

PS. I was told my 280AI was being Cerakoted just wondering if you had taken a peek at it :).

I'll see what I can do in these final two days about rounding up a decent whitetail. I haven't seen your 280AI. I was surprised when I was told that my 284 was finished, and the more so when it was finished before you had yours in hand. The Cerakoting is done once a week in batches, so my guess is that it was done today or will be done tomorrow. I am quite certain it will be worth the wait when you get it.

Doc,
You need no advice from me, so this can be filed wherever you wish!

- I find I must make myself drink more water than I used to
- epsom salt baths are not just for wimps
- ibuprofen can be consumed 800mg at a time for short periods
- taking younger people hunting can have fringe benefits
- the gutless dressing/bone 'em out/pack 'em out long distance crowd is onto something (I do think bone-in meat adds flavor, but every bone I pack or drag out that goes in the trash sticks it's tongue out at me!
- somebody needs to invent a one-man rickshaw style game carrier and harness, attachable to either a wheeled carrier or plastic sleigh
- each time I stagger back to the truck with game, I know I am to be admired and feared, yet there is no one there to truly appreciate those facts :(
Great pics and write-up as usual, looking forward to the whitetail story!

Couldn't stop laughing at this one. Not a funny (ha-ha) laugh but more of a "I know what you mean" laugh.

In the military we call this stuff Vitamin M (Motrin) because regardless of your illness you always walk out of there with some of it.

Thanks Mike, if you do get a chance a photo would be sweet of my new rifle. You could post it if you like  then everyone would get a first look at the little lady .
Good luck on that WT buck I am sure you will connect if you want it so remember photos and a good adventure story is always a treat.
Thank you my friend!!

Blessings,
Dan

Mike that is a pretty nice buck. Good work! Keep an eye on those bigger bucks for next year!

He was a smallish buck; I estimated him to be two and a half. Had I not tagged him, he could have grown some impressive headgear. I spent the day in the bush today. I saw a lot of moose (where were they during the season?) and a large number of mulies. I did see one very large buck. I didn't see him earlier this week, but he was quite casual, as if he hadn't seen all that many humans. I was moving through some fairly deep snow when I spotted quite a large whitetail buck. He appeared to be a four by four at least, though he may have had five points--I couldn't see the brow tines. He turned on the afterburners. I boogied over to a tree line and was able to see him standing about 150 yards away and watching his back trail. When he saw me, he booted it onto a rise. I didn't shoot because he was skylined. He dropped over the rise and headed for the bush that was ahead of him. I hustled up the ridge just in time to watch him disappear into the bush right in front of a very amused young mule deer buck. That was the last whitetail I saw today. I spent the remainder of the day alternately watching several areas, and though I saw a goodly number of moose and lots of mulies, I saw not a single whitetail. However, I can't shake the thought that the big boy that teased me isn't hanging around in that area just in hopes of seducing a few mule deer does. Tomorrow is the last day of the season, and I'm behind the eight ball because Sunday is looming. I suspect I could be spending a very long night Saturday evening, or possibly speaking on Sunday in bloody jeans. I don't know how that will go over in Toronto and Vancouver.

Charlie,

One more than one occasion I've taken my game to the processor early Sunday morning; then, changed into a suit before going into the pulpit. These late Saturday hunts can be demanding.

Good luck filling your whitetail tag. I greatly enjoyed your story and look forward to reading the remainder of your whitetail adventures.

Vince

Charlie, I'm not high church enough to wear even a Geneva Gown, much less a cassock or other vestments. I'll work hard today and see if I can make it out for the evening hunt. Temperatures have risen and the snow is getting a hard surface, which doesn't bode well for the game right now. I'll need to thin to give them a chance at feed. That's me, a humanitarian (deeraterian) to the utmost.

DrMike, You are a 'deeraterian" after my own heart. Good luck this afternoon or the deer slide free until next year.

They cut back on harvest, so one mule deer was all that was allowed. I'm quite certain he'll make great table fare. This is the first time in quite a few years that I've ordered smokies and fresh sausage from a mulie. I'm looking forward to this.
