Just received my Leupold VX III 2.5x8 back from the factory. I had the M1 dials added. I have mounted it on my M700 LSS 338 RUM so I can now dial up long range. These M1 dials are sweet!

Awesome! Now you can start doing what the 338 RUM was really designed for, long range shooting. Those M1 dials are pretty rugged, and very precise, I also think they look kinda cool. Let us know how it does on your 338 RUM at longer ranges, I'm interested in knowing how 8x will work for you at longer ranges.

JD338 Can you explane what an M 1 dial does? How does it work and what does it cost? I have the same scope and would like to shoot long range ( up to 600 yds ). I have a Burris ballistic plex on my varmint rifle and its very easy to use. Thanks Greyfox

Greyfox,

Leupold will add the M1 dials to any VXIII scope, both windage and elevation is $129.00. The M1 is very precise and weatherproof so you can make sight adjustments.

Here is the Mark4 version with the M1 dials to give you an idea:

Just got back from 4H fair so I will set to shooting soon.

Well the M1 dials work great.
Put the 2.5x8 scope on my M700 LSS 338 RUM and zeroed in at 100 yds. Went back to 200 yds, added 1+1 MOA and confirmed zero at 200 yds.
Now to the 400 yd target. The Ballistic program said 5+1 MOA and I fired a nice group but off the paper about 9" high. Went back to the bench and went with 4 MOA.
Shot a 3 shot group with the 200 gr AB that measured 2.265", 2 shots were .507"! The group is about 1.25" above the center of the bull.

I think this is going to work out well.

Update for the M1 dials.
Reconfirmed zero today at 100 yds.
1+1 MOA 2 shots at 200 yds went in the X ring and measured .262"
2+0 MOA 3 shots at 300 yds were 1 o'clock of X ring measured 1.987"

Load is:
338 RUM
200 gr AB
92.0 grs RL22
R-P Case
Federal GM215M Primer

I really like these M1 dials!

Glad to hear of your results JD! Once you get those dials set up, you never wanna go back to anything else. I'm in the process of zeroing my 7mm prone/bipod at ranges through 400-800. Like I said before, I always end up shooting high when I shoot prone w/bipod after sighting in off a bench. So I will have to start zeroing w/bipod laying prone, just like I would be shooting in the field. Finally got some RL-22 and some more 168g VLD's, so I'll be almost ready for hunting season.

Here is a picture of my 700LSS in 338 RUM with the Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 and the M1 dials.

Yup!

Here is a CO 5 pt bull taken at 350 yds with my 700LSS in 338 RUM and a 210 gr PT. The bull dropped in his tracks.

JD338 Very nice Elk picture and great shooting. I second remingtonman_25_06 post about the M1 dials. Thanks for posting pictures of your rifle and range setup. You have a fine looking rifle and scope.

I mailed my vari x III out Monday to Leupold for the M I conversion. They said it would take about two weeks.

BRAVO!!!!!!!!

Thanks Grayfox,

I really like the looks of my rifle and scope.
Leupold does a great job and you wont be disappointed
with the M1 dials. What scope are you having converted
and what are you mounting it on?

JD338

JD338 My scope is a 2.5x8 vari x III . My rifle is a stainless/synthetic Ruger MK II in 260 Rem caliber. This year I bought the new Ruger stock as I never liked the original stock it came with. I also added a limbsaver recoil pad. This will be my long range Deer rifle.

Grayfox,

The VXIII 2.5x8 is a great scope, capable of 400-500 yd shooting.
The M1 dials will be perfect for your set up.
Here is the target I am using, and will work out to 500 yds with the
scope set at 8x.

Let us know how things work out for you and if you need any help at the longer ranges.
Remingtonman_25_06 has a lot of experience with the dials and looong range shooting. He has been a big help to me. Thanks Remmy!

JD338 ,

Thanks for the Target web page . I will get some made up so I'm ready to go when my scope comes back. I have been reading Remmingtonman_25_06 posts about his long range shooting. This is all new to me so I'm sure to have a few questions.

I built a portable bench for long range shooting. This month I will try it out on a PD shoot in SD. If my Leupold comes back in time, I want to put it on my Marline 22lr and see how far I can shoot and hit. Big game practice on a small scale.

Just thought I would let you guys know that I sent my Mark 4 4.5x14 PR back to Leupold today for some M1 dials.
I also bought a Remington LSS stock for my 280 AI and getting it pillar bedded. Should have everything back by early March and off to the range to get her dialed in.
I'll post some pics when I get the rifle back.
