I recently came across the leupold S1 turret that replaces the standard cap and allows you to fail correction like a target/tactical turret.

It seemed like a very good addition to a standard hunting scope to have the ability to dial in elevation without permanently altering the scope or even having to send it back to leupold. It comes both with zero stop or without. The zero stop model limits you to 14 MOA of adjustment.

You have to get them thru the custom shop but at $50 I think it's a pretty good value. I'm really not sure why leupold hasn't been marketing these harder.

I ordered one in MOA for my VXIII 3.5-10x50 that's on my 300 RUM. I'll give it a review after I receive it.

Here are some pictures of the turret I poached off the net.

Anybody else on here have any experience with these turrets?

I got the turret in the mail today. It looks great, fit/finish is excellent. It was easy to install and looks to be easy to adjust. I'll take it out this weekend and give it a proper workout.

The zero stop feature limits you to one full scope rotation. This gives you 14 MOA of adjustment to play with.

My plan is to retain my 300 yard zero and use the limited adjustment to get me out for longer range. With my 300 rum load of 168 TTSX @ 3340fps using a 300 yard zero this would allow me to dial out to 850 yards without holdover. This is well past my own boundary for shots at unwounded game, but could have come in handy this year on that caribou I put down for my buddy.

If it works as well as I'm hoping this could really come in handy.

It now looks like my hunting days are going to be mostly posted and waiting. Would this system be the same as the CDS offered by Leupold already?
As I had my VX-6 set up for my 270win but I have taken the dial off as I use that scope on my 280AI .
I still might change scopes one last time if I can find a Victory with the Rapid Z-800 .

Blessings,
Dan

Similar to the CDS, but you can easily retrofit an existing scope without sending it in to have the turret added.

I see, so did you send the necessary ballistic information to Leupold for them to set up the turret?

I just wanted a MOA turret, you can tailor a turret to a specific load if you wanted.

It's just a standard MOA turret Dan. The CDS stuff is set for a specific load, altitude, etc. The CDS system has made it a lot easier for people because you dial the yardage and pull the trigger but harder if you ever want to change loads. You need a new dial if you do. With a standard MOA dial you figure out your drops in MOA and click it up that number to hold dead on. You just need a chart with you or a phone, etc to give you the correct dial in MOA.

When you order the S1 you can get it tailored to a load if you choose. I would rather have the MOA turret for use like CTD mentioned.

Having the zero stop turret limits you to 14 MOA of travel but the return to zero is important to me. Once zeroed that 14 MOA gives a flat shooting cartridge a lot of room for normal hunting ranges.

Thanks guys, you both explained it very well (y).
I believe that I will be definitely looking into a S1 turret!
I will only need it out to between 500 & 600 yards.

Blessings,
Dan
