stupid question but I only know anything about hunting scopes never ventured into tactical or even looked at one

I found a good deal on a "Leupold M4 4.5-14x40" 30mm tube side focus. It has target turrets (not M1 style)

I dotn see anything like this in current production as they are all 50 mm in the mark 4 line.

Is this a discontinued scope like a vx-iii or vari-x ii as opposed to a VX3?

Or if this a whole other onto its own how does it compare to a VX3 specifically if it were to be used as a hunting rifle?

Is it heavier?
Is it fog proof water proof etc like all the others?

Any info you can give me ASAP will be great I think I am going to have to move on it quick. Also what would be a good price!

Look on the Leupold web site (http://leupold.com/tactical/products/scopes/) at the Mark 4 LR/T and ER/T scopes and you'll likely find what you are considering. It sounds as if you are being offered a Mark 4 3.5-10 x 40 in one of the tactical models. These are excellent scopes and would work very well in hunting situations. You can read the spec sheet on the particular scope you are considering there.

DrMike is correct, its listed as a Mark 4 LR/T Target Scope.

I have the exact same scope, had the Leupold custom shop add the M1 dials.
The advantage is 40mm lens which is a lot lighter than the 50mm. The scope is very bright. No problems with it on top of my 338 RUM.

This is probably the first generation MK4. Actually it's the VariX-!!!/MK4 Tactical scope. I have one but it has the 50MM objective.

What's the price? How do you know you're getting a good deal if you don't even know what kind of MK 4 it is.

By the way, is this the one that is being offered at CPC?

Got the scope in today I almost feel bad a 750 dollar scope hardly used for 400 bucks!

My only knock on it is I should have asked for teh model # as he said it had a duplex and it is actually a fine duplex so that will more than likely cost me another 60 bucks from Leupold but still way ahead of the game!

$400.00 is a good deal. I'd take JD's advice and send it in to Leupold and add the M1 dials, and either a Mil-dot or TMR reticle....

Its already got target turrets and I really dont care for rangefinding reticles aside from maybe a mildot

Way I see it though this is going on my 257 wby so effective range on deer is 600 yards and I feel comfortable just doing holdover out to 500

for what it costs to have M1s put on I will leave it bee maybe have them do a custom turret for my caliber though
